Lakeland University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). Institutions of higher education must engage in periodic external evaluations in order to maintain their accreditation. Lakeland University's last comprehensive evaluation took place in 2009. Following that visit, upon the recommendation of the visiting team, the University received a ten-year reaffirmation of accreditation. In March, 2013, the visiting team reviewed evidence of assessment and support for graduate programs and personnel qualifications. The visiting team recommended continued accreditation, with the next reaffirmation of accreditation visit scheduled for 2019.

Lakeland's program in teacher education is approved by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) and is accredited by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC).
