Institutions of higher education must engage in periodic external evaluations in order to maintain their accreditation. Lakeland's accreditation reviews are conducted by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA), which last conducted a comprehensive institutional review in March 2002. As a result of that visit, Lakeland's accreditation was renewed for seven years, with a focused visit on curricular revisions and academic assessment required in May 2005.
Preparation for the 2009 comprehensive evaluation began in May 2007 when members of the Self-Study Steering Committee were introduced to their charge. The Steering Committee was assembled by the President of the College and included the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Director of Institutional Research, and five faculty members, each of whom was charged with the authorship of a single chapter and the coordination of a research taskforce. By the time the Steering Committee had completed its work, almost 50 faculty and staff, representing the College's many departments and reporting units, had participated formally in the research portion of the self-study, with many more members of the community contributing information as needed. The report based on their findings has been forwarded to a team of six HLC consultant-evaluators who will visit several of Lakeland's campuses, including the main campus in Sheboygan, from March 2 - 4, 2009. Two members of this team also visited Lakeland's Tokyo campus in October 2008.
Copies of the full Self-Study Report are available at each site, at the Reference Desks in the Esch Library, at the Lakeland College Japan library, and online.
