Celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Lakeland College is collaborating with Lakeshore Technical College, UW-Sheboygan, Sheboygan South High School and the Volunteers Center of Sheboygan Country to celebrate Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy of service.

Thanks to support from United Way and Illinois Campus Compact, a variety of activities are taking place on January 21 at the Sheboygan Spaceport and at several Sheboygan schools.

The theme of the day is "Don't take a day off, take a day on," and that is exactly what each team from each school plans on doing.

A CANfiguration Contest will be held at the Sheboygan Spaceport, 513 Broughton Dr., from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Teams will gather canned goods and use them to construct something related to King.

The event is open to the public and anyone can donate the canned goods. Anyone who makes a donation can cast a vote for the best structure. People interested in voting can do so from 4-4:30 p.m.

Following the event, all the canned goods will be donated to local food pantries.

Lakeland College's Black Student Union and the Zeta Fraternity are each entering four teams in the competition. Both groups have been canvassing the campus and area fundraising for the event.

The day will also include a Silent March as Lakeland student athletes and coaches will be headed to three Sheboygan elementary schools ' Sheridan, Washington and Longfellow ' to present a morning program on King and his work. The efforts will consist of a lesson teaching diversity, service and a positive outreach towards your community. Health and wellness will also be a part of the agenda to help educate the fourth and fifth graders on the importance of a healthy and nutritious lifestyle.

"The goal is to get the kids involved," said Lakeland sophomore group leader Braden Woods. "We want to get them up out of their seats and have them participate in hands-on activities to help them understand the true nature of this day."

Members of the public will also be able to show their support by participating in the event as well. A mural featuring Martin Luther King, Jr. will be at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, and anyone who brings a canned good can color in a piece of the mural. The completed mural will be on display on January 21 at the CANfiguration event.
