Former Muskie Woodson set to play professionally overseas

Former Lakeland College football player and assistant coach Keith Woodson has signed a contract to play professional football overseas in Serbia for the Sirmium Legionaries football team.

Woodson will be playing for the oldest American football team in Serbia, a team organized in 2002 and based in the city of Sremska Mitrovica. It will be his first time playing professionally, as well as his first-ever extended time out of country.

"It's going to be a new experience going overseas," Woodson said. "It's my first time going to a country to spend time over there, I've only left the country once before."

Woodson was a four-year player for the Muskies from 2007-10 and was a three-time All-Northern Athletics Conference selection from 2008-10, including twice being named to the all-conference first team. In 40 games in his career he made 165 tackles, intercepted 14 passes and broke up 41 passes. He is tied for fourth in Lakeland school history for career interceptions.

After his playing career, Woodson joined the Lakeland coaching staff for the 2011 season as a student assistant, working with the team's cornerbacks. He also was a coach at Sheboygan North High School this past year, serving as defensive coordinator on the junior varsity and assisting with the varsity team.

Woodson found out about the European football leagues from a former Muskie football player, and was able to create a profile for scouting purposes for coaches in those leagues. He emailed coaches and teams overseas and had been looking for a couple years before receiving the call from Sirmium.

Woodson graduated from Lakeland in December 2011 with a degree in fitness studies. He will fly over to Serbia sometime between Feb. 18-22, and his season will start very soon after his arrival.
