- ABOUT LAKELAND
As the Muskies' top assistant for the past two seasons, Aanonsen brings a high level of familiarity with Lakeland athletics to the position, as well as a wealth of basketball coaching experience.
In addition to on-court coaching duties, Aanonsen also directed several other critical functions as a Lakeland assistant, including recruiting coordinator, academic coordinator, director of the Muskies' summer basketball camp and manager of the program's budget.
With Aanonsen's help, the Muskies posted a combined overall record of 33-22 for the past two years, including a thrilling run last season to the Northern Athletic Conference Tournament championship, in which the Muskies knocked off the conference's top three seeds on the road, all in overtime.
A native of central Wisconsin, Aanonsen has also served as head men's golf coach and as a fitness studies instructor in addition to his men's basketball coaching duties. He will continue to serve as an instructor this year.
Prior to arriving at Lakeland in 2006, Aanonsen was the second assistant at Minnesota State University Moorhead, where he worked under head coach Stu Engen. While at Minnesota State, Aanonsen was in charge of high school recruiting throughout the Midwest, NCAA compliance, team travel, overall activity budget, academic coordination, film breakdown and post player development. The Dragons finished 16-12 during his tenure, and he helped coach three all-conference players.
Before Aanonsen began his coaching career, he played basketball at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, and was elected team captain as a senior in 2004-05. He graduated with highest honors with a bachelor's degree in exercise and sport science-sport management.
Aanonsen earned his master's degree in educational leadership-activities management from Minnesota State University Moorhead in 2007.
He and his wife, Brye, reside in Howards Grove and are the parents of one daughter, Ambryn. Brye is a member of Lakeland's admissions staff.
