Exercise Science and Sport Studies Snapshot of Success

Name: Jake Frias

Hometown: Oak Lawn, Ill.

Title: Personal trainer; head high school wrestling coach

Business: Sports Core, Kohler, Wis.; Cedarburg High School

Driven is what defines Jake, who earned his bachelor’s degree in 2010 and his master’s in counseling three years later.

Lakeland, Jake says, is a serious school. But the culture of the school also includes something else, a valuable characteristic that helped Jake thrive.

“Lakeland, in a nutshell, is about ‘compassionate business,’" Jake says. “They expect you to get the job done, but they also care about you. If you fall down, everyone at Lakeland will pick you back up and help you get back to work.”

Jake credits his advisor, Assistant Professor of Exercise Science Kelly Quick, with challenging him to excel, network and set his goals high when it came to internships. Jake also credits his on-campus fraternity, Mu Lambda Sigma, with providing a strong support system.

“Everyone at Lakeland showed me how to become a caring, compassionate, hard-working individual,” Jake says. “Everyone cleared a path for me to travel down. The small class sizes kept you accountable. If you weren’t in class, you’d hear about it. I really think I’d have been lost at a bigger school.”

Jake, an NCAA Division III Academic All-American wrestler his senior year, now teaches the sport at Cedarburg High School – in addition to working as one of the lead personal trainers at the highly regarded Sports Core fitness facility in Kohler, Wis.

Last season, while coaching wrestling at Sheboygan North, one of his wrestlers won a state championship – the first for the school in two decades.
