Muskies Fall to #7 Hope College

The Lakeland Muskies fell in a hard fought contest, 54-46, to #7 Hope College at the 17th annual Russ Devette Holiday Tournament hosted by Hope in Holland Mich.

Lakeland, who held and 23-21 halftime lead and led most of the game, went up 40-37 with 6:55 left in the second half on a 3-point basket by sophomore Kris Saiberlich. The Flying Dutchmen responded with a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to take 47-40 lead. The Muskies fought back and were able to get within four before falling 54-46.

Senior Germayne James was the only Muskie to score in double figures with 17 points. Senior Nick Howard led the team in rebounds with nine (seven defensive, two offensive). For the Flying Dutchmen senior Eric Voisin was the leading scorer with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Both Lakeland and Hope struggled from the field with the Muskies going 18-59 for 31%, while Hope went 18-58. The Flying Dutchmen also went 17-33 from the free throw line, while the Muskies went 8-15.

The 100 combined points was the fewest scored in the tournament's history, the previous low was 112 in the third place match between Taylor and Madonna. The Flying Dutchmen's 54 points marked the lowest scored by a winning team in the tournament; once again, the previous low was in the third place match in 2001 with Taylor scoring 62 in their 62-50 victory over Madonna

Lakeland, 7-4 overall, will face Goshen, Ind., in the consolation match tomorrow at 5 p.m. central standard time.
