Lakeland Men's Basketball Ranked Sixth Regionally for the Second Straight Week

Athletics - posted on 2/15/2006

The Lakeland men's basketball team appeared sixth in the NCAA's Division III Midwest Regional basketball rankings for the second straight week. The NCAA ranks eight teams in the Midwest Region and released its second of four weekly regional rankings on Wednesday, Feb. 15.

Lakeland, 20-5 overall and 16-3 against other teams in the Midwest Region, is listed ahead of Washington University in St. Louis and Elmhurst. Washington University received a vote in this week's NCAA Division III national coaches poll, while Elmhurst is ranked No. 25. Lawrence owns the top spot in the Midwest Region followed by Augustana, Carroll, Transylvania and Illinois Wesleyan. The Muskies are the only team in the Midwest Region to not receive at least a vote in the latest coaches poll, released on Feb. 14.

Transylvania and Carroll traded spots in the Midwest Region this week, while last week's seventh ranked team, North Central (Ill.), fell out of the poll despite being ranked No. 21 in the Coaches Poll.

The following criteria are used to evaluate teams for the regional rankings: in-region winning percentage, in-region head-to-head play, in-region common opponents and an in-region quality-of-wins index.

Lakeland, which won the Lake Michigan Conference regular season championship, is scheduled to open LMC Tournament play as the No. 1 seed on Thursday against eighth-seeded Maranatha Baptist in the quarterfinals at Lakeland at 7:00 p.m.
