Lakeland Men’s Basketball Ranked Eighth Regionally

Athletics - posted on 2/22/2006

The Lakeland men's basketball team is eighth in the NCAA's Division III Midwest Regional basketball rankings in the third of four weekly regional rankings.

Lakeland, 21-5 overall and 17-3 against teams in the Midwest Region, dropped two spots in the latest poll to the eighth and final spot in the region despite winning their game against Maranatha Baptist last week. The Muskies had been ranked sixth the past two weeks.

After disappearing for a week, North Central (Ill.) reappeared in the sixth spot in this week's poll. Lawrence, the only undefeated men's basketball team in any NCAA division, is ranked first, followed by Augustana, Transylvania (Ind.), Carroll, Illinois Wesleyan, North Central and Washington University in St. Louis. Elmhurst, who was ranked eighth last week, dropped off this week's edition of the rankings.

The following criteria are used to evaluate teams for the regional rankings: in-region winning percentage, in-region head-to-head play, in-region common opponents and an in-region quality-of-wins index.

Lakeland, which won the final Lake Michigan Conference regular season championship, will face Edgewood in the LMC tournament semifinal round on Thursday at 7 p.m. The winner will advance to the championship game, which will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. by the highest remaining seed, to play for the opportunity to be the final team to represent the LMC in the NCAA Tournament.
