Coach Jim Zebrowski
Lakeland College head women's basketball coach April Arvan and head football coach Jim Zebrowski were both named assistant athletic directors Monday, Lakeland athletic director Jane Bouche announced.
Arvan will be in charge of the academic portion of Lakeland's athletic department, including athletic study tables, athlete retention and the Student Athletic Advisory Committee. She will also serve as senior women's administrator, an NCAA distinction.
Zebrowski will be in charge of external relations and fundraising. Both Arvan and Zebrowski will assist Bouche in the day-to-day management of the department, which includes 15 NCAA Division III athletic programs and one club sport and just over 300 athletes.
They both will continue to serve as head coaches of their respective sports.
For Lakeland, this is a return to a previous management model which included two assistant ADs.
"We're getting so much bigger," said Lakeland Athletic Director Jane Bouche. "We're constantly looking at how we can improve things and get better. Jim and April feel the same way I do that one person cannot do it all."
"The No. 1 reason I wanted to return to this is while we're going through adding sports, hiring new people and expanding our facilities, I was feeling like I was making all the decisions myself, and I shouldn’t be. Input from other people is critical."
Work on a major expansion of the Todd Wehr Athletic Center continues through this school year, with plans to move into the new gymnasium and offices at the beginning of the 2005-06 school year.
Arvan, who earned her bachelor's degree from Lakeland in 1993 and her master of education degree from Lakeland in 1995, is entering her 11th season as head women’s basketball coach.
Arvan’s career record of 212-55 puts her among the winningest active coaches in the nation in NCAA Division III. She has guided the Muskies to four NCAA Tournament appearances in the last six years and six Lake Michigan Conference championships in the past seven seasons.
Zebrowski, who earned his bachelor's degree from Mount Union College in 1991 and his master's in workforce education and development from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 2000, is finishing up his second season as Lakeland's football coach.
The Muskies are 14-5 during Zebrowski's tenure, and, with a win Saturday, would capture at least a share of this season's Illini-Badger Conference title, the school's first since 1997.
