Muskies defeat Lawrence Vikings in season opener

Athletics - posted on 9/1/2004

In the opening game of the 2004 series, Coach Schreiber and the Lady Muskie volleyball team start off on the right foot, defeating Lawrence in three games.

The Muskies opened the 2004 season on a bang, looking to pick up the winning right where they stopped last year. Lakeland came out strong, scoring the first 6 points of the match, and looking to run away with the game. Lawrence would come surging back, and the match stayed competitive until the end, with the Muskies pulling away with the first game 30-22.

The Muskies would fight hard in the following two games as well. Lawrence kept the matches close, but to no avail. The Muskies won the following two games (30-26, 30-18) to take the match in three games.

Key players for the Muskies included Lana Neuman (Hortonville, WI) who had 39 assists and 7 digs for the Muskies. Leeann Hupfer (Westmont, IL) added 12 kills and 2 digs along with Sarah Buechel (Fond du Lac) who added 15 digs along with 4 aces.

"We needed to start out with a win because our next game is nine days away" said Coach Schreiber, "I would have been hard to sit on a loss for that long. We never got in the rhythm we would have liked, but we did see some positive things out of our new middle hitters making an immediate impact."

With the win, the Muskies move to 1-0. Their next match will be September 11th and 12th at the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament.
