Cold shooting dooms Lakeland in loss at Edgewood

The Lakeland men's basketball found itself in a big early hole and never recovered as host Edgewood topped the Muskies 73-58 in Northern Athletics Conference play Thursday night in Madison.

The Eagles (10-8, 7-4) shot over 70 percent in the game's opening 10 minutes, while the Muskies (11-8, 7-5) shot under 25 percent over the same stretch, and Edgewood rolled out to a 21-point lead. The Muskies cut the gap to nine early in the second half, but Edgewood again pushed the lead over 20 en route to the victory.

"One of the disappointing things about the beginning of the game was I don't think we followed our game plan, which was successful in first game with these guys and successful in long stretches again tonight," said Lakeland coach Kyle Brumett.

"We held them scoreless the last four minutes of the first half and for a stretch in the second half when we made some headway just by forcing them to do some things they didn't want to do. We were just not mentally tough enough to follow the game plan the whole game."

Lakeland shot just 32 percent for the night, 21.9 percent from the 3-point line, and the Eagles had a comfortable 46-34 rebound edge.

"Despite what people might think when they watch us play or see our stats, we're not going into the game trying to shoot 30 3s," Brumett said. "That's completely against how I'd like to play. We died tonight by the 3 - that doesn't make me feel real good. And when you get beat on the boards like we did tonight, you're not getting second shots and they're finishing every shot."

Senior Kris Saiberlich was the only Lakeland scorer in double figures with 21 points, while junior Peter Worth pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.

Lakeland returns to action Saturday against Dominican University in River Forest, Ill. Tipoff is 4:15 p.m.
