The Lakeland College wrestling team concluded the first day of competition at the Cornell Invite in sixth place out of 13 teams with 41.5 points on Friday, Jan. 4, in Mount Vernon, Iowa.
Although the Muskies trail first place Coe College, who recorded 86.0 points in the opening day, the squad saw two of its wrestlers, senior Paul Hartt and junior Jonas Flok, go undefeated with 3-0 records on the day.
Hartt, who is ranked No. 2 in the nation in the 197 division and is the No. 1 seed in the invite, recorded a trio of pins on the day defeating Luther College's Scott Jennings (2:38), Waldorf College's Jeff Roman (4:32) and UW-Eau Claire's Mark Frick (4:18).
Flok, who was seeded No. 5 for the invite in the 157 division, was also undefeated at 3-0 with two pins after a first-round bye. Flok pinned UW-Eau Claire's Mike Walker in just 54 seconds, then took out Central College's Kyle Ray in 2:37.
Sophomores Adam Sutter and Jake Frias were forced to fight their way back in the third place bracket after being knocked out of the championship bracket in the third round. Sutter, the No. 3 seed in the 285 group, went 3-1 with a tough loss to Allyn Plattner of Luther College, 7-2. He went on to secure a spot on the matt in at least one of tomorrow's concluding matches for third place by pinning Coe College's Mitch Sander in 5:03.
Frias also went 3-1 in the 165-pound group, recording a pair of wins before being pinned by No. 1 seeded Tyler Burkle from Coe in 1:14. Frias then recorded his third win of the day in the third-place bracket, pinning Buena Vista's Jon Terronez in 3:04 to move on to the next match tomorrow in hopes of securing the third place title at 165.
Juniors David Copp and Ben Chapman also competed in the 125 and 149 divisions, respectively. No. 4 seeded Copp successfully fought through a tough second round match with Cornell's Cole Mason after a first-round bye, then fell to the No. 5 seeded Ryan Hill from Wartburg and Buena Vista's Kyle Donlan to finish at 2-2 for the invite.
Chapman also put up a good fight with a pair of decisive wins in his first two matches, 8-1 and 7-1, before falling to the No. 1 seeded Aaron Cook, 7-0. He was then defeated by Waldorf's Ryan Garcia in the third-place bracket, 3-0, to end the invite at 2-2.
Lakeland will look to move up the rankings as the Cornell Invite continues on Saturday, Dec. 5. Meet start time is set for 9 a.m.
