Day 1: Sheboygan, Wis., Chicago, Ill., and Georgetown, Texas

Assistant director of sports information Chris Lindeke brings you daily coverage from Georgetown, Texas, where the Lakeland men's basketball team will play Trinity on Thursday, Dec. 18 and Southwestern on Friday, Dec. 19.

It is 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday night, and the Lakeland men's basketball team has finally settled in for the evening after a long day of traveling.

The day began at 7:45 a.m., when the 24-person travel party departed the Wehr Center on a coach bus to O'Hare Airport. Breaking down the travel party: 16 players, three coaches, student manager Andy Marks, assistant athletic trainer Garth Laszinski, head coach Aaron Aanonsen's wife, Brye, and their soon-to-be 1-year-old daughter, Ambryn, and yours truly. We were treated to a showing of The Dark Knight on the way down to Chicago.

We arrived at the airport around 10:15 a.m., a little earlier than expected after some clutch work behind the wheel from our bus driver, Ray. Assistant coach Tyler Bormann led the way, checking us in at the American Airlines gate.

After getting through security unscathed, we grabbed lunch at a food court close to our departure gate. Freshman forward Jake Schwarz, the conference's reigning player of the week, showed off his impressive line-up of DVDs he brought for the trip. The selection, which included the classic comedy Happy Gilmore as well as newer favorites such as Wedding Crashers, prompted assistant coach Kris Saiberlich to lobby for a seat next to Schwarz on the plane.

Our flight took off from Chicago at about 1:20 p.m., just a few minutes behind schedule. About half way through the flight, freshman point guard Josh Regal nearly jumped out of his seat after waking up from a bad dream, prompting some laughter from his back-up, freshman Hunter Wolf, who was seated in the row behind him. We certainly haven't seen that type of wide-eyed look from Regal, the team's leading scorer, on the court so far.

A couple of the guys, junior Anthony Cobb and freshman Brandon Bray, made their first plane trip of their lives. Both seemed to make it through with "flying" colors (horrible joke). Overall, the flight was very, very smooth.

As the coaches sorted out car rentals at the airport, many of the guys snacked and listened to music in the lobby. Freshman forward Germell Heard even treated the Aanonsen's young daughter, Ambryn, to some music on his iPod. She nodded and kicked her feet approvingly.

About an hour and 30 minutes after touching down in Austin, we finally began the 45-minute trek north to Georgetown in four rental cars. To make a long story short, it was an interesting trip with Coach Bormann leading the way, but we finally made it to our hotel just outside of Georgetown at around 7 p.m. A couple members of our travel party referred to the trip as a "circus," but no one was upset and we all made it safely.

After a trip to Chipotle and a brief team meeting, we have finally settled in for the night. Tomorrow, the team will practice at 10 a.m. at Southwestern University, followed by a trip to the University of Texas for shooting at the Erwin Center followed by a tour of the Longhorns' athletic facilities, which the guys seem to be pretty excited about.

Check back tomorrow night for more from Texas!
