Day 3: Georgetown, Texas
Athletics - posted on 12/18/2008
Assistant director of sports information Chris Lindeke brings you daily coverage from Georgetown, Texas, where the Lakeland men's basketball team will play Trinity on Thursday, Dec. 18 and Southwestern on Friday, Dec. 19.
It's about 10:15 p.m. on Thursday night. Tonight, the Lakeland men's basketball team suffered an 83-52 loss to No. 22 Trinity in the first game of the Southwestern/Trinity Classic at Southwestern's Robertson Center.
The loss seemed to be a combination of Lakeland's youth and inexperience and Trinity's physicality and overall talent. The guys battled, especially in the second half, but it just wasn't enough, especially after the Tigers went on a 15-0 run that started at the end of the first half. By the 16:34 mark of the second half, Trinity pushed its lead to 22 points, which really seemed to deflate the young Muskies.
One bright spot came out of this game: Senior forward Pete Worth, who was shooting 36.4 percent from the free throw line entering the game, and has certainly never been known as a good free throw shooter, finished 5-for-5 from the charity stripe for the game. Assistant coaches Tyler Bormann and Kris Saiberlich were razzing Worth about it after the game, who responded, "well, the five free throws match the five turnovers I had tonight." It's difficult to not like the hard-working Worth.
Head coach Aaron Aanonsen and his staff are currently meeting with the players to go over tomorrow's opponent, Southwestern, on film. The tournament's host team defeated Marian University, one of Lakeland's Northern Athletics Conference rivals, 67-56 in the night cap.
The guys received their wake-up call this morning at 9 a.m. for breakfast down in the lobby. At 10:30, we met at the vans and departed for shootaround at Southwestern. After some individual drills, Bormann took the guys through a few of Trinity's offensive sets and end out-of-bounds plays.
After lunch at Subway, the guys were sent to be on their own until we departed at 3:30 p.m. for the game. Some of the players took naps, while others watched TV or played cards to relax during the down time.
After the game, the guys snacked on subs from Jimmy John's that were provided by Southwestern as the team watched the Marian/Southwestern game.
The Muskies take on Southwestern tomorrow at 7 p.m. More to come from Georgetown after that.
I took a couple of photos during the game. They are not of the highest quality but add some color to this entry (thanks to assistant athletic trainer Garth Laszinski for letting me use his camera).
