Lakeland places 21st at nationals
Athletics - posted on 3/12/2009
The Lakeland wrestling team finished tied for 21st with 11.5 team points at the NCAA Division III National Tournament last Friday and Saturday, March 6-7, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The finish was the highest in school history for the Muskies, who sent two wrestlers, junior Adam Sutter (285 pounds) and senior Jonas Flok (157), to the championships.
"I'm so proud of our guys for what they've been able to accomplish in such a short period of time," Lakeland coach Pete Rogers said. "It shows that our seniors believed in our program all along, and it all paid off this year."
Lakeland finished its season with four Northern Wrestling Association champions and five wrestlers who placed in the top six of the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional.
Sutter achieved All-American status after finishing sixth in the 285-pound division at nationals. The Gladstone, Mich., native won three consecutive matches, including two by fall, after dropping his opening bout.
Flok, an Egg Harbor native, was knocked off by decision in back-to-back matches in the 157-pound bracket.
A total of 62 teams were represented at the national wrestling tournament.
