Muskies close out California trip with loss

The Lakeland College women's basketball team was unable to overcome a solid University of Redlands offensive attack as the Muskies dropped their second game in as many nights, falling 63-48 Monday night in Redlands, Calif.

Redlands (7-2) used an 8-0 run before and after halftime to take a 32-22 lead four minutes into the second half. The Muskies, following a KC Blahnik (Gladstone, Mich) layup and Mary Dennewitz (Chicago, Ill.) three pointer, trailed by just thee points at 34-31 with 12:59 remaining. Redlands shortly pulled their lead back to double digits and maintained a healthy lead while closing out the 15 point win.

Lakeland (9-2, 5-0 NAC) took the first lead of the game on a Blahnik layup. The Muskies took possession of the lead four times in the first half as the game stayed close in the first 20 minutes.

The Bulldogs shot an impressive 63.6 percent from the field in the second half after connecting on just 32 percent of its shots in the opening half. The Muskies struggled overall to find its shooting touch, making only 34 percent of its attempts on the night.

Dennewitz paced Lakeland with 15 points on 6 of 13 shooting. Blahnik was the only other Muskie in double figures 14 points as she also added seven rebounds and four assists. Alison Davis (Sheboygan)  also contributed seven boards in 16 minutes off of the bench.

Lakeland got to the free throw line just five times on the night and converted just three of 11 attempts from behind the three point line.

Courtney Carroll scored 25 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and recorded the only four blocks of the night in a dominant performance for Redlands. Aly Bueno added 14 points for the Bulldogs and was 4 of 9 from three point range.

Lakeland returns home on Jan. 6, 2010 at 7 p.m. for a non-conference contest against Beloit College.
