MADISON, Wis. - The Lakeland women's basketball team surrendered a double-digit second-half advantage, losing a heartbreaking 52-51 decision at Edgewood in a Northern Athletics Conference showdown on Thursday night.
With the defeat, the Muskies (16-6 overall, 11-4 NAC) are now tied with Edgewood for second place in the NAC North Division.
After taking a 44-34 advantage at the 7:51 mark of the second half, Lakeland converted only one field goal the rest of the way to go along with a pair of free throws. The Eagles closed the contest on an 18-7 run.
The two teams combined for 49 turnovers and 40 personal fouls in the rugged affair. Edgewood made just 58.1 percent from the free throw line, but the Muskies made good on only nine of their 19 attempts.
Edgewood (11-11, 11-4) clung to a 50-48 advantage with 55.1 seconds remaining. After a missed lay-up by junior guard Mary Dennewitz, the Muskies forced a turnover on the other end. However, Lakeland was unable to capitalize, turning the ball over with 12.5 seconds left.
The Eagles hit a pair of free throws at the other end, rendering Dennewitz's buzzer-beating 3-pointer meaningless.
Lakeland had held the lead for the entire game, until Edgewood tied it at 48-48 with 1:16 remaining.
In the first half, the Muskies forced 18 turnovers as Edgewood struggled against Lakeland's full-court pressure. Lakeland finished with 19 steals for the game to add to its league-leading total.
Senior forward Katie Kilton (Waukesha, Wis.) paced the Lakeland attack with 10 points as six players scored at least six points in the game. Freshman guard Dana Henrichs (Fall Creek, Wis.) filled the box score with six points, five rebounds and a team-high five steals.
Lakeland returns home to play Marian for its final game at Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium this season on Saturday. Kilton, forward KC Blahnik, and guards Chelsea Coenen and Terra Hiben will be honored prior to the 2 p.m. tip-off as part of Senior Day festivities.
