Muskies handle Sabres on senior day

The Lakeland College women's basketball team shot over 50 percent in the second half as they put away Marian in a dominating 68-44 victory on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

Senior KC Blahnik (Gladstone, Mich.) scored nine of her team-leading 16 points after the break as the Muskies completed 53.6 percent of its attempts in the half, and 44.3 percent of its shots on the day.

Lakeland thanked Blahnik and fellow seniors Chelsea Coenen (Wrightstown), Terra Hiben (Boyceville), and Katie Kilton (Waukesha) for their contributions in a halftime ceremony.

"It was certainly an emotional day for our four seniors, not knowing if they'll play another home game this season," Lakeland head coach Teri Johnson said. "They came out wanting to make a statement and we were very happy with their play as a group."

Lakeland took its first decisive lead of the day late with a six point run to end the first half. After sophomore Erin Cepa (Glenview, Ill.) converted a pair of free throws with 2:24 remaining in the half, Mary Dennewitz (Chicago, Ill.) connected on a jump shot and assisted on a buzzer-beating lay up from freshman Dana Henrichs (Fall Creek) to grab a 32-21 halftime lead.

"We gave up too many easy looks inside to Marian in the first half," Johnson said. "We talked at halftime about needing to extend our defense in the second half, as well as pushing the ball up the floor to wear them out."

Blahnik added eight rebounds to go with her 16 points on 7-15 shooting. Dennewitz added 11 points and was 3-5 from behind the 3-point line. Becca Tilleman tallied four steals on the day as Lakeland forced 27 turnovers.

"It was good to see our senior leadership step up after a tough loss on Thursday", Johnson said. "They came out and took the game where we came out and played flat against Edgewood."

Emily Reiter was one of three Marian players to score in double figures, recording 12 points and 13 rebounds. The Sabres shot just 30.9 percent on the day and hit just three of 21 attempts from behind the arc.

Lakeland closes out its 2009-10 conference schedule with a road trip to rival and conference leader Concordia Wisconsin on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m.
