Muskies come back to win road dual
Athletics - posted on 2/5/2010
The Lakeland wrestling team won six of eight matches en route to a 24-21 victory over MSOE in a Northern Wrestling Association dual match on Friday night.
The Muskies (7-9 in dual meets), who had to forfeit matches at two weight classes, clinched the win when junior Bill Wood (Manistique, Mich.) pinned Steve Nguyen of MSOE in 1:54 at 285 pounds.
Wood normally serves as the back-up to senior All-American Adam Sutter, who was unable to wrestle due to illness.
"Bill stepped up tonight," Lakeland coach Pete Rogers said. "He found out he'd be wrestling (on Thursday night). It's nice that our second guy can come in and win for us."
Five other Muskies were victorious by decision, including sophomores Rob Frias (133) and Jake Montie (141), who had been battling injuries recently.
Seniors Ben Chapman (157) and Jake Frias (165), and freshman Ryan Renon (174) gave Lakeland back-to-back-to-back victories to give the team a 15-12 advantage. Frias (Oak Lawn, Ill.) finished sixth at last week's Wheaton Invite, while Chapman (Plymouth, Wis.) and Renon (De Pere, Wis.) finished eighth.
"We were decent as a whole," Rogers said. "We basically started out down 12-0 with the two forfeits. For our guys to dig down and get it done was exciting."
The Muskies return to the mat next Saturday, Feb. 13, for the NWA Tournament. Matches are set to begin at 11 a.m. at MSOE in Milwaukee, Wis.
