Muskie Spotlight - Nikki Commons
Athletics - posted on 10/12/2009
Four years, four all-conference selections.
Lakeland senior Nikki Commons became the first women's golfer in Northern Athletics Conference history to be named to the All-NAC team four times after tying for fifth at the NAC Women's Golf Championships on Oct. 4-5 at Glen Erin G.C. in Janesville, Wis.
Commons, a Bonduel, Wis., native, fired a two-day total of 185 (91-94) to lead the Muskies to a sixth-place finish.
"Nikki practices constantly, so that is something that helped her throughout the season," Lakeland coach Cathy Hanek said. "She played very well on a challenging course (at the NAC Tournament) where you have to hit the ball straight to avoid the thick fescue grass."
In her four-year golf career, Commons never finished outside of the top five at the conference tournament.
In the 2009 season, Commons never finished outside of the Top 10, and placed in the top five on two occasions. She averaged 91.2 strokes per 18-hole round, carding a season-low 86 in the second round of the Benedictine Invitational on Sept. 19-20. She finished fourth in the tournament.
"She was at her best at Benedictine," Hanek said. "The biggest thing, though, is how much time she spends playing. If we had an afternoon practice, there was a good chance that Nikki was out on the course earlier or had done something to improve before that."
Commons is majoring in elementary education and is involved in the Student Wisconsin Education Association (StWEA).
