Muskie Spotlight - Gary Petit
Athletics - posted on 10/19/2009
It's fair to expect big things from Gary Petit of the Lakeland men's golf team in the next two years.
Petit, a sophomore, earned his second consecutive All-Northern Athletics Conference team selection after finishing seventh at the 2009 NAC Men's Golf Championship on Oct. 12-13 at the Irish Course at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wis.
The Monroe, Wis., native fired a two-day total of 158 (78-80) to help the Muskies finish fifth in the tournament.
"Gary didn't play his best golf near the end of the year, so to shoot a 78-80 on that course not playing your best golf is very good," Lakeland coach Tyler Bormann said. "He's definitely established himself as one of the top players in our conference and a leader by example for our team."
Petit finished sixth in the league with a 77.8 strokes per 18-hole round scoring average, carding a season-low 72 in the second round of the MSOE Invitational on Oct. 4-5.
Last season as a freshman, Petit finished 14th at the NAC Championship.
"I think the biggest difference this year compared to last year is his confidence," Bormann said. "He was more aggressive, but still played within himself. He picked his spots to be aggressive, which is why he was able to score low in a number of rounds."
Petit is majoring in accounting and is a resort and sports management minor.
