Muskie Spotlight - Joey O'Brien

Athletics - posted on 10/26/2009

At 5-foot-8, 160 pounds, Lakeland senior Joey O'Brien isn't the ideal size of a college football player, let alone a player who can have an impact on the outcome of a game.

That's why it may be surprising that O'Brien, a defensive back, recorded a team-high 2.5 sacks in the Muskies' 30-14 victory at Benedictine on Saturday.

Lakeland players and coaches, however, are not surprised by the efforts of the Cary, Ill., native.

"Joey doesn't look like your typical college football player, but he is physical and is an effective blitzer out of the secondary for us," Lakeland defensive coordinator Colin Bruton said. "He's also a smart player who knows his limitations and plays to his strengths, and he's now started our first seven games this season."

Prior to the season, O'Brien had seen limited playing time in his career, fighting for playing time in a deep Muskie secondary every season and contributing mostly on special teams.

This season, O'Brien is fourth on the team with 35 tackles, including 3.5 sacks, and has two pass breakups and a pair of passes defended.

"Joey's a great leader for us defensively," Bruton said. "He's had some problems with a couple knee injuries since he's been here. He started as a running back, but has now found his place in the secondary."

O'Brien is majoring in psychology with a minor in writing. He is also a member of Mu Lambda Sigma and the Psychology Club at Lakeland.
