Athletics - posted on 10/27/2009
The Lakeland men's basketball team has been selected to finish in a tie for fourth in the Northern Athletics Conference North Division by the league's coaches, the NAC announced Tuesday.
Marian and Lakeland, which finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the division last season, received 32 points apiece.
Edgewood has been picked to repeat as North Division champion, receiving nine of the 12 first-place votes and 67 points total, 10 points more than second-place Concordia, Wis.
Benedictine has been selected to repeat as South Division champion, garnering five first-place votes and 61 points overall.
The Muskies, who last season posted a 10-15 overall record to go along with a 4-12 mark in NAC play, return four of their five starters, including leading scorer and rebounder Jake Schwarz (Sheboygan, Wis.).
Schwarz, a sophomore forward, averaged 16.6 points and 8.2 rebounds in 2008-09, garnering NAC honorable mention and All-Freshmen team honors.
Sophomore point guard Josh Regal also received All-Freshman team accolades a year ago. The Suring, Wis., native returns as the team's second-leading scorer (15.6 ppg) and leader in assists (84) and steals (27).
Lakeland also returns a pair of seniors in Khendal Andrews (Kankakee, Ill.) and Anthony Cobb (Milwaukee, Wis.).
One of the team's best shooters, Andrews shot .362 from three-point range and .926 (25-of-27) from the free throw line.
Cobb, who started 10 games last season in the Muskies' frontcourt, averaged 5.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.
Other 2008-09 contributors returning include juniors Sam Schroeder, Phil Sontag and Trevor McKown, and sophomores Germell Heard, Reggie Thomas, Hunter Wolf and Brandon Young.
The NAC enters its second season of divisional play. Lakeland competes in the North, along with Concordia, Wis., Edgewood, Maranatha Baptist, Marian and Rockford. The Muskies will play each team in its division twice during the regular season.
Aurora, Benedictine, Concordia Chicago, Dominican, MSOE and Wisconsin Lutheran make up the South. Lakeland will face each of these teams once.
