Muskie Spotlight - Will Baldwin
Athletics - posted on 11/3/2009
Will Baldwin had some big shoes to fill prior to the start of the 2009 Lakeland football season.
Fast forward eight games into the year and it is clear that Baldwin, a junior linebacker, has filled in superbly for a two-time all-region honoree at one of the most important positions on the field.
Baldwin, who has replaced former Lakeland standout John Wagner this season, recorded a team-high eight tackles, including one for a loss, in the Muskies' 19-0 victory over Maranatha Baptist on Saturday at Taylor Field.
"Will has stepped into the starting line-up this season, and has done a nice job as a leader in calling the right plays and coverages," Lakeland defensive coordinator Colin Bruton said. "He's done a better job playing against the run, especially in taking on the fullback and against tosses to the outside."
For the season, the Waukegan, Ill., native is tied for the team lead with 53 tackles, including 5.5 for a loss. He has also forced a fumble and recovered a team-high four fumbles, starting all eight games for Lakeland.
Bruton is encouraged by Baldwin's success thus far.
"We have an entire year left with him, and I think he should end up as one of the better linebackers in the league by the time he's done here," Bruton said.
Baldwin is a sports studies major with a minor in business management.
