The Lakeland College wrestling team opened its 2009 season with a 1-3 record Saturday afternoon at the Lakeland Duals.

Freshman Ryan Renon (DePere) finished a perfect 4-0 on the day at 157. Cory Hildebrandt (Granger, Ind.) at 125 and Jacob Frias (Oak Lawn, Ill.) each won three of their four matches for the Muskies.

"I expected big things from Ryan because he works so hard," Lakeland head coach Pete Rogers said. "Any time you can win four matches in a day, that's not something many people can do. Jacob had a great day and showed tremendous improvement from last season and Cory Hildebrandt also had a great day in his first collegiate matches as a freshman."

Lakeland was leading in its final match of the day against Wabash after a 17-4 Jacob Frias victory gave the Muskies a 16-10 advantage, but the Little Giants recorded pins over Rob Forgette and Brad LeClair at 197 and HWT, respectively. Forgette and LeClaire each wrestled at heavyweight at times today as returning All-American Adam Sutter was inactive.

Lakeland opened the day with a strong 37-9 victory over UW-Eau Claire, recording a pin from Forgette among eight total wins. The Muskies then dropped matches against ranked opponents North Central 31-12 and Concordia Morehead 46-3.

"We wrestled hard all day long," Rogers said. "The guys who had the opportunity wrestled with a lot of heart. It was a good experience that will make them better in the future."

The Muskies return to action Tuesday, Nov. 10 at UW-Stevens Point for a 6 p.m. match.
