Senior Mary Dennewitz had 19 points and three assists to lead the Lakeland College women's basketball team to a 63-54 win over Augustana College Friday night at the Moose and Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies (1-1) rallied back from a two-point halftime deficit and limited the Vikings second chance opportunities in the second half. With the win, Lakeland moves on to the Tip-Off Tournament championship game tomorrow afternoon against the University of Chicago.
Junior forward Mallory Magee (Stockton, Ill.) scored 13 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Magee shot 50 percent from the field and 60 percent from behind the 3-point arc to help lead the Muskies.
Head coach Teri Johnson was pleased with the team's overall efforts.
"We did a great job of taking care of the ball on both halves," said Johnson. "That says a lot about the team and it was a descent two halves for us."
Junior guard Becca Tilleman (Green Bay, Wis.) made some key shots and was defensively sound. Tilleman scored 10 points, grabbed two assists and added one steal.
"Tilleman did a great job for us defensively," said Johnson. "She initiated our offense and made shots that she isn't always expected to take. She's a great sparkplug for us."
Johnson also praised the play of Dennewitz (Chicago, Ill.) who went 40 percent from the field.
"Mary's a top player for us and she didn't have the greatest first half, but tough players find a way to come back second-half and she hit some key shots for us."
Lakeland returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 20, against the University of Chicago in the championship game. Tip-off is 4 p.m.
