Junior Alyssa Schuttenhelm (Waterford, Wis.) had 16 points to lead the Lakeland College women's basketball team to a 70-63 victory over the University of Chicago Saturday night in the championship game of the 10th annual "Play With Grace" Tip-Off Tournament.
The Muskies led by as many as 10 points early second half, but saw that lead shrink as Chicago made several runs and get to within four points with 1:12 left. Lakeland remained strong defensively and kept their composure to improve to 2-1.
Senior Mary Dennewitz (Chicago, Ill.) hit a jumper to give the Muskies a six point lead with 43 second left. The Maroons hit just one of their final three three-point attempts to end the game.
Junior Erin Cepa (Glenview, Ill.) and Dennewitz combined for 30 points. Cepa had 15 points and a team-high six rebounds off the bench. Cepa knocked down some clutch shots including shooting 50 percent from behind the three-point arc. Dennewitz hit six of eight free throws, including two to give Lakeland an eight point lead with 20 second to play.
The Maroons' Taylor Simpson recorded a double-double scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Schuttenhelm and Dennewitz were each selected to the All-Tournament team, with Dennewitz receiving tournament MVP.
