Muskies fall in final seconds

Sophomore Rachel Diedrich recorded her first double-double of the season with a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Lakeland College women's basketball team suffered a 56-53 setback against Alverno College.
After falling behind early, Lakeland (7-10, 4-7 NAC) took control and built an eight point halftime lead. Diedrich led the Muskies with nine first half points and junior Becca Tilleman remained tough defensively as she recorded three steals. Alverno shot just 33 percent in the first half and went 0-for-4 from behind the three point arc. This defensive effort allowed the Muskies to build their lead.
The Muskies came out hot in the second half and led by as many as 12 points, however, the Inferno wouldn't go away. Lakeland's defense began to let up and let the lead slip away. Alverno was able to shoot 52 percent in the second half and went 10 -for-14 from the free throw line. They were also 1-of-2 from three, and they made it count, as Shataya McComb would hit the game-winning three-pointer as time expired.
Although they couldn't hold the lead, Lakeland head coach Teri Johnson saw some positives that the team can build on moving forward.
"We played good defense in the first half, we just broke down there at the end," said Johnson. "We were able to get good bench play from Rachel Diedrich and Becky Mayo, but it just wasn't enough. It shouldn't have come down to the last shot, we need to close better."
Sophomore Becky Mayo had eight points and juniors Becca Paulson and Becca Tilleman added six points each. Tilleman also finished with four rebounds and five steals.
Alicia Kontowski led the Inferno with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Lakeland returns to action Saturday, Jan. 29 as they travel to Milwaukee, Wis., to face NAC south division foe MSOE. Tip-off is 2 p.m.
