Lakeland loses in final home game

Sophomore forward Becky Mayo (Gladstone, Mich.) led the Lakeland College women's basketball team with ten points in a 63-60 loss to Northern Athletics Conference foe Edgewood College on Wednesday night.

The Muskies (9-15, 6-12) got off to a slow start and trailed the Eagles by seven in the first five minutes of action. Lakeland would trail by as many as 13 in the first half, but steal and layup by junior Becca Tilleman (Green Bay, Wis.) with eight seconds left in the half cut the lead to eight. Edgewood would take that eight point, 33-25 lead into the break.

The Muskies struggled shooting the ball in the first half, going 10-38 (26.3 percent) from the field and 2-13 (15.4 percent) from behind the three-point arc. Meanwhile, the Eagles were hot, as they shot 50 percent (13-26) from the field and 45.5 percent (5-11) from behind the arc. The biggest difference was on the glass, as the Eagles out rebounded the Muskies 25-16.

Lakeland fought back in the second half, after trailing by 13 points with 12:53 left, the Muskies used a 17-9 run to get to within five points, 56-51, with 7:05 left to play. Lakeland would get to within three points with five seconds left, but couldn't convert and would suffer a loss in their final regular season home game.

Lakeland shot just 32.4 percent (24-74) from the field and 15.8 percent (3-19) from behind the arc. They couldn't slow down Edgewood as they shot 47 percent (24-51) from the field and 35.3 percent (6-17) from three.

Seniors Mary Dennewitz (Chicago, Ill.) and Chelsea Coenen (Wrightstown, Wis.), who scored nine and eight points respectively, each grabbing four rebounds, were honored before the game as part of senior night. See what they had to say about their Lakeland experience Click Here.

The women's basketball team joined over 1,800 participants across the nation in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's 2011 breast cancer awareness initiative, Pink Zone™.

Proceeds from Lakeland's Pink Zone™ event were donated to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, a charitable organization committed to raising money for scientific cancer research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause.

Lakeland concludes their 2010-11 season on Saturday, Feb. 19 as they travel to Aurora, Ill. to take on Aurora University in the NAC Challenge Game. Game time is to be determined.
