Junior Josh Regal scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Lakeland College men's basketball team to an 86-81 victory over Northern Athletics Conference rival Marian University Saturday evening in Fond du Lac, Wis.
The Muskies (13-10, 8-7 NAC) led by as many as 11 points in the first half before the Sabres went on a late run to cut the lead to three heading into the locker room.
Marian tied the game at 44 when Jeff Harris hit a 3-pointer at the beginning the second half of play. The Sabres went a run to take the lead with 17 minutes and 24 seconds left in the game, but it wasn't enough as Lakeland regained the lead to secure the rival conference win.
Junior guard Bobby Komorowski (Germantown, Wis.) scored 17 points, grabbed five rebounds and went 4-of-5 from behind the arc. Regal (Suring, Wis.) added a game-high eight assists to go along with his 19 points. Junior Jack Ridgway (Sioux Falls, S.D.) posted 16 points and added three rebounds.
Lakeland shot an impressive 48 percent from the field in the first half of action and shot a season-high 81.1 percent from behind the arc in the second half.
The Muskies capitalized on 24 points off of 17 Sabres' turnovers and turned 16 offensive rebounds into 16 points.
Head coach Aaron Aanonsen was pleased with the team's play.
"We did a nice job in the first half and got into a good rhythm," said Aanonsen. "We had good looks at the rim, but defensively we didn't do a good job at contesting their (Marian's) shots. Marian shot the ball well, but we were able to make the right plays at the right times."
For the game, Lakeland shot 43.8 percent from the field, 65.2 percent from 3-point range, but struggled from the free throw line, shooting a mere 56. 5 percent. Marian shot 50 percent from the floor, 43.8 percent from 3-point range and 76.2 percent from the charity stripe.
Lakeland returns to NAC action on Tuesday, Feb. 15 as they host Wisconsin Lutheran College in the last regular home game of the season. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. in the Woltzen Gym.
