Josh Regal scored a career-high 31 points to lead the Lakeland College men's basketball team to a heroic 85-76 Northern Athletics Conference win over Rockford College Saturday afternoon in the Moose and Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies (6-6, 2-3 NAC) took control of the game in the final seconds of the first half when Regal (Suring, Wis.) hit a clutch shot with 1.7 seconds left to tie the game at 32 and sank his free throw to give Lakeland the 33-32 lead heading into the locker room.
The Muskies never relinquished its lead and went up by as many as 12 points in the second half, despite the Regents comeback efforts. This marks Lakeland's first win over Rockford in two seasons, with the last victory coming on Dec. 15, 2007.
Head coach Aaron Aanonsen was exceptionally pleased with the team's overall efforts.
"It was a great win for us tonight," said Aanonsen. "Our big players stepped up and made big plays and defensively we did a great job holding Rockford under its average. Rockford is the best offensive team in the conference and holding them below their average was the key to winning the game."
Lakeland was able to capitalize on the Regents mistakes, turning 18 turnovers into 23 points.
Freshman guard Tim Rotruck (Milwaukee, Wis.) also had a career-high night, scoring 23 points to go along with three assists. Rotruck's clutch shots helped the team secure the win in the final seconds of the game.
For the game, Lakeland shot 51.7 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from behind the arc and 84.2 percent from the charity stripe. The Regents were held to 48.3 percent from the floor, 31.8 percent from behind the arc, but posted an impressive 92.9 percent from the free throw line.
Senior forward Trevor McKown (Hot Springs, N.D.) scored 13 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Regal ended the night with nine assists and six rebounds, including hitting six 3-pointers and going 9-9 from the charity stripe.
