MILWAUKEE- Freshmen Justin Ward and Tal Diekvoss each scored 17 points to lead the Lakeland College men's basketball team to a 90-77 win over Wisconsin Lutheran College in a Northern Athletics Conference showdown Thursday night at the Recreation Complex.
The Muskies (9-7, 4-4 NAC) shot 61.3 percent from the field in the first half to take a 21 point advantage heading into the locker room. Before gaining a convincing lead, Ward (Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) hit a lay-up at the 16:22 mark to tie the game at nine. After taking the lead, the Muskies never looked back and held onto the lead for the remainder of the game.
Head coach Aaron Aanonsen was pleased with the team's energy and defense.
"We played really well tonight," said Aanonsen. "We came out with a lot of energy and shot the ball well. In the second-half we came out with the same energy and we did the things we needed to do. Defensively we made the stops we needed to make and took control of the game."
Lakeland went up by as many as 32 points in the second-half and took complete control of the game.
Junior guard Jack Ridgway (Sioux Falls, S.D.) scored 15 points and added two assists. Junior forward Germell Heard (Milwaukee, Wis.) posted 11 points grabbed seven rebounds and posted three assists. Ward ended the game with nine rebounds.
Lakeland ended the night shooting 53.7 percent from the field, 45.8 percent from behind the arc and 75 percent from the free throw line. Wisconsin Lutheran shot 53.7 percent from the field, but struggled from behind the arc, shooting only 33.3 percent.
Andy Thusius led the Warriors with 15 points and five rebounds.
The Muskies return to action on Saturday, Jan. 22 in a cross division NAC matchup against Aurora University. Game time is slated for 4:15 p.m. in the Moose and Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
