Lakeland unable to hand Falcons first NAC loss

Athletics - posted on 2/9/2011

Junior Bobby Komorowski's 3-point shot bounced off the rim and the Lakeland College men's basketball team suffered a tough 79-75 setback to Concordia, Wis., in Northern Athletics Conference action Wednesday night in the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gym.

Komorowski (Germantown, Wis.) tied the game at 73 when he drilled a 3-pointer with 2:41 left in the game. CUW's Cory Stark hit a pair of free throws to take a two-point lead with 1:21 left. The Muskies tied the game once again on a pair of free throws by freshman Justin Ward (Wisconsin Dells, Wis.), but CUW was able to retain the lead and remain undefeated in the NAC.

CUW went on a 10-0 run late in the first half to take a 13 point advantage at the half. The Falcons went up by as many as 15 points before the Muskies went on a run in the last seven minutes of the game.

The Muskies out rebounded CUW 35-28 and head coach Aaron Aanonsen was pleased with the team's presence on the glass.

"We did a really nice job rebounding tonight," said Aanonsen.

"Rebounding is something we've been preaching to the guys all year and it finally sunk in. We played well in the second half and displayed some of their (CUW) weaknesses, but in the end to beat a team that is the second best team in the region, you have to execute all 40 minutes and we didn't do that tonight."

Junior guard Josh Regal (Suring, Wis.) recorded his first double-double of the season, scoring 12 points to go along with a season-high 12 assists. Komorowski and junior guard Jack Ridgway (Sioux Falls, S.D.) ended the night with 13 points to lead the Muskies. Junior forward Germell Heard (Milwaukee) scored 12 points and added four rebounds. Ward ended with 11 points and five rebounds.

For the game, Lakeland shot 49.1 percent from the field, 30.4 percent from behind the arc and 70.6 percent from the free throw line. CUW shot 50.8 percent from the field, 35 percent from 3-point range and 80 percent from the charity stripe.

Lakeland returns to NAC action on Saturday, Feb. 12, as they travel to Fond du Lac, Wis., to take on rival Marian University. Tipoff is slated for 4:15 p.m.
