Renon leads Muskies with a second place finish

Junior Ryan Renon led the Lakeland College wrestling team with a second place finish at the 165-pound weight class at the Concordia Open in Mequon, Wis., on Saturday.


The Concordia Open is one of the largest NCAA Division III tournaments and consists of roughly 350 wrestlers and 30 teams from seven different states. This year, five top 25 teams were among the field, including No. 1 Wartburg College, No. 11 North Central College, No. 15 University of Wisconsin- Whitewater, No. 21 Augustana College and No. 23 Wabash College.
 

Renon (Wrightstown), who was the No. 2 seed, fell in the championship match to the No. 1 seeded Landon Williams of Wartburg College in an 18-8 major decision. Renon earned a 12-0 major decision over Shawn Flom of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in round one. He captured his fourth technical fall of the year in round two, this time against Lenny Kuspa of Triton, 15-0. Round three was another major decision with a 16-2 win against Conner Monk of Itasca. In the semi-final match Renon had the 6-3 decision over James Layton of the University of Chicago.
 

Senior Robby Frias (Oak Lawn) finished seventh at 149 after falling in an 8-1 decision to the No. 2 seeded Drew Wagonhoffer of Wartburg in the second round. Frias battled his way back in the wrestle backs as he earned the 11-4 decision over Brandon Starkey of Concordia University Nebraska.
 

Also earning wins for Lakeland were sophomore Grant Franson (Lindenhurst, Ill.) and freshmen Eduardo Orihuela (Park Ridge, Ill.) and Logan Gueths (Ashwaubenon).
 

Franson pinned Justin Valhuerdi of Itasca in 4:54 in first round of wrestle backs, but fell in a 9-3 decision to Jake Papke of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside at 125. Orihuela earned an 11-2 major decision over Ryan Przbylski of Itasca at 133. He fell in a 17-0 tech fall to Jameel Carter of Wilbur Wright in the second round of wrestle backs.
 

Gueths pinned Jeremy Walters of Triton in 1:37, but lost to Eric Telford of Muskegan in round two of wrestle backs at 157.
 

The Muskies return to the mats at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Invite on Dec. 3 in Milwaukee, Wis.
