Schwarz's 25 points not enough in season opener

Junior forward Jake Schwarz scored a game-high 25 points, but the Lakeland College men's basketball team came up short in a 76-61 loss to Lake Forest College in its season opener in Lake Forest, Ill.

Poor shooting in both halves cost the Muskies (0-1) in the early-season loss. Lakeland shot just 30 percent from the floor in the first half and 14.3 percent from behind the arc.

Lakeland was able to find a rhythm in the middle of the first half as the team went on a 14-7 run to take a one point advantage at halftime. Senior Josh Regal (Suring) sparked the Muskies first and only lead of the game with six seconds left in the half as he converted on a layup.

The Foresters used a 15-3 run late in the second half to take the non-conference victory. Schwarz cut Lake Forest's lead down to four with 4:07 left to play, but the Muskies couldn't contain the hot-shooting Foresters who ended the second half 51.9 percent from the field.

"It was a tale of two halves with Lake Forest," said head coach Aaron Aanonsen. "Lake Forest is a good team and they found a rhythm in the second half. They got to the line and we struggled offensively. I thought we played well and had good looks at times in the first half, but we couldn't convert in the second half or slow Lake Forest down."

Lakeland forced 21 turnovers, while only committing 12 of its own, but got out rebounded 47-32.

Schwarz (Sheboygan) ended the night nine-for-20 from the floor and grabbed six rebounds. Regal chipped in with 15 points, six steals and five assists. Sophomore James Oshkeshequoam (Shawano) scored 11 points and added two steals.

For the game, Lakeland shot 33.8 percent from the field and 20.8 percent from 3-point range. James Stack led Lake Forest with 18 points.

The Muskies return to action on Nov. 22 in the team's home opener against Beloit College. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. in the Moose and Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
