Lakeland hands Sabres sixth conference loss

Athletics - posted on 1/11/2012

FOND DU LAC, Wis.- Sophomore Justin Ward scored 17 points on 6-for-10 shooting to lead the Lakeland College men's basketball team a 97-77 win over rival Marian University in Northern Athletics Conference action Wednesday night.

The 10-3 Muskies used a 52 percent shooting display from the field for the convincing league victory and stayed atop of the NAC North Division.

Lakeland never trailed the entire game and built a 54-30 lead at halftime behind 54.8 percent shooting from the field, including 50 percent from 3-point range.

Four Muskies recorded double-digit performances as the team imposed its will on the Sabres in the second half. Junior Jake Schwarz, senior Josh Regal and sophomore Stan McKenzie chipped in with 16, 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Lakeland led by as many as 34 points in the second half to hand Marian its sixth conference loss. The Sabres cut the lead to 17 with 50 seconds left to play, but it was too little and too late. Sam Koslowski led all scorers with 19 points.

Head coach Aaron Aanonsen was pleased with the team's tempo and style of play.

"Overall I thought we played very well at both ends of the court tonight," said Aanonsen. "We forced turnovers and got Marian out of a rhythm, especially in the first half. We got out and ran the court and it helped us maintain a steady lead."

Lakeland returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 14 as they host Northland International University in the team's last non-conference game. Tip is 4:15 p.m. in the Moose and Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
