The Lakeland College women's basketball team won the consolation game of the 2011 Lakeland College Tip-Off Tournament with a 75-67 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Stout on Saturday.
The Muskies (1-1) started slow, but were able to get on track turning an early three-point deficit into a nine-point half time lead, 36-27. The Muskies were able to capitalize on Blue Devil turnovers, scoring 10 points off them and 14 points in the paint. Lakeland shot 40.7 percent (11-27) in the first half while holding UW-Stout to 21.4 percent (9-42).
The Blue Devils made it interesting in the second half as the Muskies lost a 10 point lead and couldn't seem to break the full-court press of the Stout attack. However, after some adjustments, Lakeland was able to build back their lead and won the game at the free throw line. That was the difference in the game as Lakeland shot 65.7 percent (23-35) from the charity stripe while UW-Stout struggled, shooting 46.2 percent (12-26).
Lakeland was led by junior Becky Mayo who had a team-high 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Sophomore Jessica Genke recorded her second double-double of the season, scoring 12 points and pulling down 14 rebounds.
For her efforts, Genke also received All-Tournament team honors.
Lakeland returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 26, when it opens Northern Athletics Conference play at Alverno College. Tip off is set for 2 p.m. in Milwaukee, Wis.
