Freshmen David Galarno and Jeremy Kroeger placed third and seventh, respectively to lead the Lakeland College wrestling team to a ninth-place finish at the 48th annual North Central College Invite Saturday afternoon in Naperville, Ill.
The Muskies placed ninth as a team after scoring 47 points and were without many of their starting wrestlers.
Galarno (New Holstein) was the top finisher for the grapplers at the 174-pound weight class. After losing his first match to the No. 1 seed, Trevor Tyler of Olivet, Galarno won seven-straight matches to finish third. In his triumph, he recorded six-straight pin falls and a 7-5 decision over No. 4 seeded Drew Songer of Wabash College in the final match.
"Galarno had an unbelievable day," said head coach Mike DeRoehn. "Getting six pins in one day is unheard of."
Kroeger (Villa Park, Ill.) also had a breakout day at 184. Kroeger placed seventh in a tough weight class as he went 4-2 on the day. He recorded a major decision and two pin falls to battle his way back for a seventh-place finish.
"Jeremy had a great day," said DeRoehn. "He's continuing to improve and is buying into our system."
