Muskies place sixth after two rounds of NAC Championship

The Lakeland College men's golf team finished its 2011 fall season by placing sixth at the 10-team Northern Athletics Conference Championship at Whistling Straits Irish Course in Haven, Wis.

The Muskies shot a 333 in the second round, improving by 10 strokes from their first-round score.
Senior Ben Laubusch (Germantown, Wis.) recorded a second-round score of 80, for a two-day total of 165 good for a tie for 16th in the 48-player field.

Junior Sam Fisher (Eau Claire, Wis.) shot an 83, while freshman Ryan Newburry (Campbellsport, Wis.) shot a second-round 84. Fisher carded a 167, and Newburry shot a 174 for the tournament.

Senior Brian Balistierri (New Berlin, Wis.) and sophomore Tyler Kubicek (Madison, Wis.) each shot an 86 on the tournament's second day. Balistierri finished with a 174 after shooting an 88 on day one. Kubicek carded a 172 after posting an 86 on day one.

Lakeland totaled a 676 (343-333) over the two-day tournament. The Muskies finished 13 strokes behind Wisconsin Lutheran College and 18 shots better than seventh-place Marian University.

Dane Zachman of MSOE carded a 77 on Monday for a 151 total to take the lead after two rounds. He narrowly edged out Andrew Cobb of Edgewood College and his own teammate, Colin Winistorfer, by one stroke as both of those players finished with a two-day 152.

Edgewood, which entered the day in second place and two strokes back of MSOE, rallied back with a 309 in round two and leads the championship by 12 shots over the Raiders. The Eagles totaled a team score of 626.

Lakeland will resume its season in the spring with further competition, including rounds three and four of the NAC Championship, which will determine the conference champion and NCAA Tournament qualifier.
