This week the Lakeland College women's basketball team continues Northern Athletics Conference play, as they travel to River Forest, Ill. on Saturday, Dec. 3 to face Dominican University at 2 p.m.
Lakeland (2-1, 1-0) won its NAC opener, 70-53, over Alverno College on Nov. 26. Sophomore forward Jessica Genke continued to shine as she scored a team-high 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds. The Muskies used the 3-point
line to fuel the win, hitting 11-20 shots from long distance with sophomore Aimee Thrune leading the way with four.
Last season, the Muskies lost to Dominican at home, 73-68. Lakeland shot just 32 percent from the field, including just 25 percent (5-20) from the 3-point line. The only returning player that made significant contributions last year is senior Alyssa Schuttenhelm, who had eight points. Meanwhile, the Muskies must stop the Stars guards Katie and Sarah Budz, who combined to score 17 points and grab 16 rebounds a year ago.
This year, Lakeland will look for more contributions from junior Becky Mayo and Genke to provide some presence inside, and the team hopes for more solid guard play.
