Lakeland continues improvement, defeats Alverno for fifth win

MILWAUKEE - Brittany Jurek (Jr.-Gladstone, Mich.) improved to 10-1 in singles matches this season and the Lakeland College women's tennis team grabbed another Northern Athletics Conference win, defeating Alverno College Wednesday afternoon.

The Muskies led Alverno 5-3 when the final match at No. 1 singles between April Schmitz (Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) and Tricia Goska was called due to darkness with Schmitz up a set and trailing 5-4 in the second set. Lakeland clinched the overall match win though and improves to 5-6 overall and 3-6 in the NAC while dropping Alverno to 3-6 overall and in conference.

Jurek continued to roll at No. 5 singles, defeating Damanique Drake 6-2, 6-2 for her eighth consecutive singles win. She also paired with Erica Hoffmann (Jr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) for an 8-2 win over Drake and Lin Liu at No. 2 doubles.

Hoffmann also improved to 8-3 at singles this season, defeating Lin at No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-3. The Muskies also were victorious at No. 4 singles as Lynn Pipke (Fr.-Greenfield, Wis.) defeated Libby Kent 6-2, 6-0, and Pipke and Schmitz accounted for Lakeland's final win at No. 1 doubles, defeating Goska and Abigail Kohal 8-6.

Kohal scored a win for Alverno at No. 2 singles, defeating Lakeland's Jenna Oberthaler (Jr.-Iron Mountain, Mich.) 6-1, 6-1. Ashley Schmeling also defeated Alissa Stephani (So.-Appleton, Wis.) at No. 6 singles by the same score, and Kent and Schmeling also defeated Oberthaler and Samantha Tonn (Fr.-Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.

The Muskies play their final home match of the season on Saturday when they host Concordia University Wisconsin at 10 a.m. at the Sports Core in Kohler.
