Muskies open men's golf season sixth at Marian Invitational

FOND DU LAC - The Lakeland College men's golf team hung around the middle of the pack both days, finishing sixth at the Marian University Invitational at Whispering Springs Golf Course.

The Muskies opened the 2012-13 season and finished with a two-day score of 671, opening with a round of 328 on Sunday before finishing with a 343 on Monday. Marian dominated the tourney with a score of 609 to win by 37 strokes over second place Carroll (Wis.) University.

Lakeland finished at the back of a four-team pack that was tightly bunched after the first day but spaced out on the second day. Lawrence University, Milwaukee School of Engineering, Edgewood University and Lakeland were separated by four strokes after Sunday, but Lawrence shot a score of 329 on Monday to finish at 653, with MSOE fourth (657) and Edgewood fifth (660).

The Muskies were led by Tyler Kubicek (Jr.-Madison, Wis.) and Andy Schneider (So.-Franklin, Wis.), who tied for 22nd individually with two-day scores of 167. Kubicek shot 81 on Sunday and 86 on Monday, while Schneider carded an 82 on the first day and 85 on Monday.

Beau Gundersen (So.-New Berlin, Wis.) was right behind Kubicek and Schneider, finishing with rounds of 81 and 88 to tie for 24th with a score of 169. Matt Lewellyn (Fr.-Oshkosh, Wis.) tied for 33rd with rounds of 88 and 84 to finish at 172, and Ryan Newburry (So.-Campbellsport, Wis.) tied for 39th with a score of 173 including rounds of 84 and 89.

The Muskies continue their fall season Tuesday, Sept. 18 at the Concordia University Wisconsin Fall Classic Invitational at the North Shore Country Club in Mequon.
