Lakeland to trick or treat for Cans Across the Conference

Athletics - posted on 10/26/2012

Lakeland College student-athletes will be hitting the streets this Halloween night for trick or treating, with the goal of supporting a local food pantry.

Lakeland mascot Musko will join Muskie athletes on Oct. 31 as they will be collecting non-perishable food items and dollar donations for the Northern Athletics Conference's Cans Across the Conference community service competition. The canned food drive is a competition among the Student-Athlete Advisory Committees of NAC member schools, with each school collecting canned food items to donate to local charity.

Muskie athletes will be collecting cans in Howards Grove, Kohler, Plymouth, Sheboygan and Sheboygan Falls. In addition to food items, one dollar donated will equal two cans, and toiletries such as shampoo, soap, toothpaste and deodorant will also be counted.

Lakeland's chosen charity is the Sheboygan Salvation Army, and the Muskies led the NAC competition as of Monday, Oct. 22, with 2,389 items collected. Last year Lakeland collected 3,703 items for the Plymouth Food Pantry and Safe Harbor, finishing second in the NAC standings to Alverno College.

This is the seventh year the NAC has sponsored the competition. The winning school receives a traveling trophy to display until next year's competition.

For more information or to donate items please contact Lakeland College SAAC advisor Lindsey Vande Hoef at (920) 565-1564. More information on the Cans Across the Conference program is available on the NAC website at http://northernac.org/information/saac/cans.
