Muskie Men Upset Edgewood; Advance To LMC Tournament Championship
Feb. 21, 2004

The Lakeland College Men's Basketball Team used a strong second half surge and some late three-point heroics to upset the number one seeded Edgewood College Eagles 67-63 in Madison Saturday night.

It was a story of two different halves that saw the Muskies get outscored 25-20 in the first frame before upping the tempo in the second half to outscore the Eagles 47-38.

Late in the game Ryan Hiir and Cory Nickel hit consecutive three-pointers to erase a Lakeland deficit and propel the Muskies to a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Nickel and Hiir led Lakeland with 23 and 12 points respectively. Nick Zeck added 11 points and nine rebounds in just 26 minutes due to foul trouble.

A glaring difference in the game came on the boards as Lakeland out-rebounded Edgewood 37-23, allowing the Muskies to overcome seven more turnovers than Edgewood (14-7). The Muskies also received some solid bench play to relieve their starters while the Eagles went mostly with a five man line-up.

Lakeland caught another break when the top-seeded Concordia Falcons lost 91-81 Sunday night to visiting Wisconsin Lutheran. This mean the Muskies will host Lutheran on Saturday at 7pm for the tournament championship. The winner will receive an automatic NCAA bid.

With the elimination of Concordia, a number one seed has yet to win the men's basketball conference tournament since an automatic NCAA bid was at stake…an amazing stretch of 5 straight years.
