STEVENS POINT - Jacob Maechtle (So.-Port Washington, Wis.) posted the best finish for the Lakeland College wrestling team at the Pointer Open hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Saturday.
Maechtle won a 6-4 decision over Brandt Welcher of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside to place fifth at 149 lbs. He lost his first match of the day but then came back to win four of his final five matches the rest of the way.
Maechtle was the lone Lakeland wrestler to finish in the top six in his weight class. Grant Franson (Jr.-Lindenhurst, Ill.) had the next best result, finishing 2-2 at 125 lbs. One of his wins came over teammate Alec Noa (Fr.-Westmont, Ill.), who finished 1-2 on the day.
Eduardo Orihuela (So.-Menominee, Mich.) won his first match before losing two straight matches at 133 lbs., and Wesley Colton (Fr.-Machesney Park, Ill.) did the same at 174 lbs., posting a 1-2 record.
Jeremy Kroeger (So.-Villa Park, Ill.) finished with a 1-2 mark in the Heavyweight class. Marcus McCauley (Fr.-Hillpoint, Wis.) was 0-2 at 141 lbs. and Matt Weber (So.-Lockport, Ill.) also went 0-2 at 157 lbs.
UW-Parkside and the University of Wisconsin tied for the most individual champions with four each. No team scores were kept.
The Muskies return to action next Saturday, Nov. 17 when they travel to Mequon to compete in the Concordia University Wisconsin Open beginning at 9 a.m.
