The Lakeland College Women's Tennis Team moved their record to 6-0 overall
and finished the Lake Michigan Conference regular season with a perfect
5-0 mark after a 6-3 victory over Marian College Tuesday afternoon in
Sheboygan.
The Muskies accomplished this feat shorthanded as Heidi Heling was out with an injury. Lakeland used just five players and was forced to forfeit #6 singles and #3 doubles, but still came away with the impressive win.
Lakeland's top four players, Hanaka Murakami, Heather Ourada, Akiko Matsuhashi and Cody Carlson, won their singles and doubles matches. Murakami, Ourada and Carlson finished the conference season undefeated and should earn top seeding at the conference tournament this weekend. Furthermore, Murakami and Ourada are also undefeated at #1 doubles.
Matsuhashi proved to be the key player in Tuesday's match when she beat a previously unbeaten opponent at #3 singles 6-2, 6-2. She also was bumped up from #3 doubles to replace Heling at #2 doubles and teamed with Carlson for an easy 8-1 win.
The Muskies play a non-conference match at home on Wednesday verses Mount Mary before competing in the LMC Tournament on Oct. 6th and 7th at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.

Women's Tennis Prevails Over Lawrence in Season Opener
Sept. 12, 2002
The Lakeland College
Muskies overcame the forfeiture of two matches but still dominated host
Lawrence University 7-2 Thursday in Lakeland's season opener in Appleton.
The Muskies were led by the stellar play of standouts Heather Ourada and Hanaka Nakamuri. Ourada (sr.), the team's captain and only returning player from last year's third-place Lake Michigan Conference team, easily won at #2 singles 6-3, 6-2, and teamed with Nakmuri to overwhelm Lawrence at #1 doubles 8-0. Nakamuri debuted at #1 singles and was a smashing success with an easy 6-2, 6-0 victory.
The key match was the #2 doubles match played early in the contest that set the tone for the day. Heidi Heling and Cody Carlson made an improbable rally from a 0-5 defecit to win 9-7. This was nothing new for this tandem as they teamed together at UW-Sheboygan and won the state 2-year college doubles championship in 2000. Both Heling and Carlson went on to easily win their single matches at #5 and #4 respectively.
A fourth newcomer, Akiko Matsuhashi, won at #3 singles to complete the sweep of the matches actually played.
Lakeland's next match is September 17th when the Muskies take on MSOE in Milwaukee.

match. She finished the year undefeated in the conference at her position.
