Chris Werner joined Lakeland in 2013. He directs the concert band and also directs the pit orchestra for the spring musicals and the college's summer music camp.

Prior to joining Lakeland's faculty, Werner served as instrumental music teacher and music department chair at La Crosse (Wis.) Central High School. He was conductor of the Central Wind Ensemble, pep band, Grand Central Station Show Band and instructor of music theory.

Werner holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in wind conducting from the University of Nebraska. He has the distinction of being the first University of Nebraska DMA recipient of the Wind Conducting degree and also the first Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts F. Pace Woods Scholar in Music. He also holds a bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and master of music degree in wind conducting from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Werner has twice been awarded the "Citation of Excellence" from the National Band Association-Wisconsin Chapter.

He is an accomplished clarinetist, serving as assistant principal clarinet for the La Crosse Concert Band, principal/assistant principal clarinet with the UW-La Crosse Choral Union and substitute assistant principal clarinet with the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra.

He teaches courses in conducting, music appreciation, instrumental music methods, supervision of student teachers and courses as a part of the interdisciplinary studies core. In the summer, he is camp director of the Lakeland's annual Summer Music Camp. His research interests include conducting pedagogy, creativity instruction in the large ensemble and commissioning new pieces for wind bands.
