Sport Management and Leadership Snapshot of Success
Name: Trista Barron
Hometown: Escanaba, Mich.
Title: Occupational Therapist
Business: Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center
Twice a week last spring, Lakeland College junior Trista Barron made the short drive to Sheboygan, where for five hours, she learned about occupational therapy at the Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center.
This exciting internship cemented Barron's career ambition.
"I want to help people," says the native of Escanaba, Mich. "That's really what it comes down to. I don't want to just sit at a desk all day."
Occupational therapy is similar to physical therapy, but OT is designed to help people regain the motor skills necessary to perform day-to-day living tasks and become independent again after illness or injury.
Barron, a starter on the women's basketball team, will require a master's degree after earning her Lakeland bachelor's degree. She'll begin applying to professional schools in fall.
Bill Ebben, Lakeland's first-year associate professor of exercise science, constantly stresses the importance of strong internships and overall post-graduate preparedness. Ebben, who takes pride in helping deserving students earn admission into strong professional programs, speaks highly of Barron.
"She's a great student," he says, "but an even better person."
