Kathy Strong-Twohig '92

Kathy Strong-Twohig's educational and career path has taken some interesting twists and turns, bringing her to the place she is today, the executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Fond du Lac County and the owner Strong Designs, an interior design business.

In the late 1980s, Kathy was working as the MIS Director at Ripon Medical Center with an associate degree from Moraine Park Technical College in computer programming. "I knew that I wanted to get my bachelor's degree. RMC offered an educational scholarship, and I choose Lakeland College for its reputation, extended classroom location and transferable credits."

Taking two-three classes per semester at Lakeland's Fox Cities Center, Kathy completed her bachelor's in business administration and computer programming in five years. She left RMC to earn a degree in interior design from Fox Valley Technical College.

Kathy married in 1994 and started working as an interior designer in the family business, Twohig Furniture and Flooring. Simultaneously, she was on the board of directors for the Fond du Lac Humane Society, and honed her fundraising skills by creating a number of successful events including Pawsatively a Ball, Santa Paws photos, and Take a Hike Pet Walk.

Kathy was hired to lead Habitat for Humanity of Fond du Lac in 2004, which put her fundraising skills, ability to multi-task and experience with volunteers to good use. Thanks to her interior design degree, she was familiar with reading blueprints, which was important when working with area builders and understanding timelines for house construction. "I came to HFH with many contacts from the Home Builders Association and also the FDL Association of Commerce, reinforcing the value of becoming involved in the community and the importance of networking."

Two years ago, Kathy had the vision to write the business plan to open the ReStore and she now oversees the work of two employees and numerous volunteers. Ten of the 17 houses built by HFH since it began in Fond du Lac in 1996 have been built during Kathy's five-year tenure. In 2010, two more houses will be built, thanks to a recently secured Thrivent Builds grant.

Kathy was born and raised in Fond du Lac and grew up as the youngest of five, borrowing money from her parents to attend MPTC. "It gave me the value of earning good grades and striving to be the best that I could. I went on to graduate with honors from Lakeland.

"Lakeland's curriculum was well rounded and the instructors were knowledgeable, not only in their topics, but also in their life experiences that they often shared. The intimacy of the smaller classes gave students the privilege of getting to know our instructors as real people.

"I really miss the late night studying and camaraderie of my classmates. Driving the 100 miles a night to work, school and back home ... not so much! Looking back, it is hard to believe that I had enough time in my day." Kathy was working full-time at Ripon Medical Center while working on her Lakeland degree, and also teaching water aerobics three days a week and working at the health club desk at The Ramada Plaza Hotel in Fond du Lac. "Working at the counter did allow me the chance to just stay put long enough to do homework."

In 2005, Kathy graduated from the Fond du Lac Leadership program, and at the 2009 graduation ceremony was honored with the Donald G. Jones leadership alumni award. This award recognizes the efforts of a leadership alumnus for their efforts in the Fond du Lac area through volunteer service and leadership.

Kathy's involvement in the community is impressive. She is a team captain and a member of the board of directors of Loaves and Fishes. She is a member of Women in Management of Fond du Lac, Noon Kiwanis, and she volunteers her time at the Fond du Lac Humane Society, Windhover Center for the Arts, Relay for Life and the Fond du Lac Volunteer Center. She also participates in Leaders as Readers and the Home Builders Association of Fond du Lac and Dodge Co.

"I truly believe that giving back to my community is a privilege to me. I have the opportunity to donate my time, talents and treasure. I have also been blessed with many friendships."

To those just graduating, Kathy says, "I cannot stress enough the importance of getting involved. It is easy to choose what you love, but take that extra step and go outside of your comfort zone to become involved in something that will challenge you, and with it will come personal growth."

IRS Adrian Project making rare Wisconsin appearance at Lakeland College on Friday, Nov. 20

The investigation will get started with an anonymous tip, a meeting with law enforcement or maybe something as innocent as a bag of garbage.

From there, 20 Lakeland College students on four teams will have four hours to work with special agents of the Internal Revenue Service to solve one of four hypothetical financial crimes.

Lakeland will partner with the IRS Criminal Investigation Division, the law enforcement arm of the IRS, on Friday, Nov. 20, to conduct the Adrian Project Student Fraud Conference. It is only the second time this college-level version of the Adrian Project has been held in Wisconsin, both at Lakeland College.

"We are excited to have this opportunity to work closely with Lakeland College and provide the students a 'hands on' exposure to the work of an IRS Special Agent," said Julio La Rosa, the Acting Special Agent in Charge of the St. Paul Field Office for IRS Criminal Investigation, which covers Wisconsin, Minnesota and North and South Dakota.

"This is a great way for the students to see a unique side of the accounting profession. Hopefully, some students will walk away from this experience thinking, 'This is what I want to do with my career path.' "

Lakeland, which has the largest accounting program of any college or university in the state, hosted the Wisconsin debut of the Adrian Project in the fall of 2007.

"We're proud to be the host of the Adrian Project," said Rick Gaumer, assistant professor of accounting at Lakeland. "This is a wonderful experience for our students that allows them to use their accounting skills in areas they might not have associated with this profession."

This interactive learning experience exposes students to the inner workings of a fraud investigation through the eyes of an IRS Special Agent, and presents forensic career opportunities to accounting students.

The Adrian Project is being conducted with students enrolled in Lakeland's forensic accounting course, taught by Bob Martin, a former special agent with the IRS who is a member of Lakeland's business faculty. Several IRS Criminal Investigation Division employees will be at Lakeland, coaching the teams and serving as role players during the exercise.

Lakeland students will tackle cases involving a drug deal, two sets of accounting records and falsification of tax records.

It's up to the students to follow the paper trail and expose the fraud by gathering evidence and interviewing potential witnesses, played by seasoned IRS Special Agents and other volunteers. Some of the students utilize the tools available to federal law enforcement officers, including undercover operations, surveillances, subpoenas and search warrants. At the end of their scenarios, the students meet as a group to discuss their investigation, while receiving an evaluation from their coaches.

"Rooms in our business center will be set up for surveillance cameras to be installed, evidence will be scattered in various places for students to find, interrogation interviews will be conducted and arrests will be made," Martin said. "Our students will be 'special agents' for the day."

It's the latest feather in the cap of Lakeland's accounting program:

Robert Keebler, a 1982 Lakeland graduate, was recently recognized by CPA Magazine as one of the "Top 40 Tax Advisors to Know During a Recession." From 2003 to 2006, Keebler was named by CPA Magazine as one of the Top 100 Most Influential Practitioners in the U.S.

Kim Nygard, a 2009 Lakeland graduate who works as a financial accountant at Schreiber Foods, Inc., in Green Bay, earned the highest Certified Management Accountant (CMA) Exam score in the nation by a college student in the winter of 2009.

The IRS has recognized Lakeland for the college's version of the Volunteer Income Tax Preparation Assistance (VITA) program. Student volunteers prepare free tax returns for low-income Sheboygan-area residents, and have generated over $3.5 million in tax refunds over the past five years.

Football prepares for powerhouse UW-Whitewater

The Lakeland football team opens the 2009 NCAA Division III Playoffs at No. 2 UW-Whitewater this Saturday, Nov. 21, at 12 p.m.

The Muskies (6-4) wrapped up the Northern Athletics Conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAAs after Concordia Chicago, which held the head-to-head tiebreaker on the Muskies for the NCAA berth, was defeated by Benedictine, 15-14. Lakeland wrapped up a 28-0 home victory over Aurora just 30 minutes before the CUC game was decided.

The on-field pandemonium and celebration that ensued would be short-lived for Lakeland, however. The Muskies learned on Sunday they would be facing the Warhawks (10-0), who have appeared in the last four national championship contests, winning the Stagg Bowl in 2007.

Most of the Muskies' senior class was on the roster when the team suffered back-to-back losses to Whitewater in the 2006 and 2007 seasons. Seniors Blaine Hornes, Josh Gordon and Eric Panske were also members of the team when it was defeated at home by the Warhawks in 2005.

Hornes (Neenah, Wis.) is the lone player on the Lakeland roster who appeared in the program's only other NCAA Tournament appearance, a 49-22 loss at Augustana (Ill.) in 2005.

"The experience is what it's all about," Hornes said. "It's a different atmosphere and a big crowd. I expect it to be even bigger this time, so we have to get over the 'wow' factor and keep our emotions in check."

This week, players and coaches have stressed the need to "do us," which, according to Hornes, has been the team's motto for the last three weeks of the season.

Junior quarterback Jake Dworak (Denmark, Wis.), who leads the NAC's No. 2 scoring offense, stressed mixing in the running game with the high-octane passing attack.

"We need to have more balance running and throwing the ball," Dworak said. "If one is not working, we have to try not to call plays one-sided. More things will open up if we keep some balance."

The Lakeland defense, which has three shutouts this season and has allowed just 30 points in the last four games, will be challenged by a formidable Whitewater offense.

"We have to make our plays, and everyone has to do their job," Hornes said. "We have to compete and keep our heads up. If they are driving on us, hopefully we can counter."

The Scouting Report: UW-Whitewater

The Warhawks won their fifth consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) title with a 58-21 victory at UW-La Crosse. Running back Levell Coppage rushed for 144 yards and two scores, while wide receiver Jordan Wells caught a pair of touchdowns.

Whitewater's offense, which has not scored fewer than 35 points this season, ranks in the top 10 in the nation in scoring offense (42.6 points per game), total offense (500.6 yards per game), passing efficiency and sacks allowed.

Coppage, who has 1,434 yards and 24 touchdowns in 2009, leads the WIAC and ranks fourth in the nation in rushing.

"UW-Whitewater has a very fine-tuned offense," Lakeland coach Kevin Doherty said. "Coppage is averaging seven yards per carry and about 200 yards per game, which says a lot considering the league they play in. We have to make him earn it, be disciplined and make no mistakes."

Quarterback Jeff Donovan racked up 2,447 passing yards and 20 touchdowns to just four interceptions this season.

Whitewater receivers Adam Brandes, Jordan Wells and Aaron Rusch each have over 600 yards and at least five touchdowns apiece.

"Donovan is real big and makes great decisions," Doherty said. "They are explosive and have big-play potential at wide receiver, and have a solid offensive line. They also create confusion with a lot of different formation looks, shifts and motions."

Defensively, Whitewater ranks third in scoring defense and sixth in total defense. Linebacker Kyle Supianoski leads the team with 61 tackles, while defensive back Lane Olson has 46 tackles and leads the team with 5.5 sacks.

The 21 points allowed last Saturday at La Crosse are the most surrendered by the Warhawks in one game this season. UW-Whitewater allows an average of 8.40 points per game.

"They have athletic defensive backs who will challenge our wide receivers," Doherty said. "They are athletic up front, and their linebackers are smart and disciplined. They don't run many different fronts, but they know how to play their defense."

The Warhawks lead the all-time series 6-0, defeating the Muskies, 41-7, in the last meeting between the teams on Sept. 1, 2007.

Horstmeier named special teams student-athlete of the week

Lakeland kicker Nic Horstmeier (Random Lake) has been named the Northern Athletics Conference Student-Athlete of the Week from Monday, Nov.9 to Sunday, Nov. 15.

He averaged 41.2 yards per punt on four punts Saturday afternoon in Lakeland's 28-0 shutout over Maranatha. He boomed a 52 yard punt into the end zone after the Muskies' first possession of the game, the longest kick of his career.

"Nic did a really nice job this past week," Lakeland head coach Kevin Doherty said. "A lot of people don't realize what it means to have a great punting game. He helped give us field position for our defense to work with and we're really happy with how he's performed this season."

Lakeland heads to UW-Whitewater on Saturday, Nov. 21 for a noon kickoff to open the first round of the NCAA Div. III playoffs.

2009-10 Women's Basketball Season Preview: Muskies have conference championship on mind

There's a different energy surrounding the Lakeland College women's basketball team this season.

The Muskies are building off of a 17-9 season last season. Their 11-6 record in the Northern Athletics Conference last season was good for third place in the North Division.

Lakeland head coach Teri Johnson believes this year's team has the leadership and experience for a serious push at the NAC title.

"When you become a senior, reality hits that it's your last go-around," Johnson said. "You want it more. It brings a completely different determination to the game than when you're younger, because this is your last chance. Every team in the NAC is probably talking about a conference championship, but we truly believe it's possible for us this season."

Eight players return from the 2008-09 team, which lost to Aurora in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.

"I feel like this is a different team," Johnson said. "The last two years we've been fairly young, and last year we were starting three freshmen at times. This year, it's nice to have that leadership and experience. Four seniors is big for us, but it's nice to have the supporting role behind them with experience, and it should help us win games this season."

The Muskies will benefit from the return of three seniors from last season's squad after returning just one the year before.

Senior forward KC Blahnik (Gladstone, Mich.), a second-team all-conference selection, led the team in scoring (11.7), rebounds (7.8) and steals (42).

"KC Blahnik will be a key to our success," Johnson said. "She can score and rebound and definitely has some high goals set for herself. She has worked very hard during the offseason, and is ready for a great senior year. "

Blahnik will be joined in the starting lineup by fellow senior Chelsea Coenen (Wrightstown, Wis.). One of Lakeland's vocal leaders, she averaged 6.1 points and 4.0 rebounds per game in her first full season.

"Chelsea has been more focused and determined this season." Johnson said. "She brings intensity every day, and that's a great asset to have in a program."

Senior forward Katie Kilton (Waukesha, Wis.) should be in for an increased role this season after averaging 5.6 points and 3.1 rebounds in 15.5 minutes per game last season.

"Katie snuck up on us last season," Johnson said. "She knows what her strengths are and she plays into those."

Terra Hiben (Boyceville, Wis.) returns this season after averaging 4.8 points and 3.8 rebounds in 24 starts in the 2007-08 season. One of the Muskies' top defenders, Hiben's play will be defined by more than stats.

"It's great to have Terra back this season," Johnson said. "She brings energy on defense for us, but she's capable of scoring because her defense dictates her offense."

Junior Mary Dennewitz (Chicago, Ill.) and sophomore Becca Tilleman (Green Bay, Wis.) will see most of the time at point guard this season. Dennewitz is Lakeland's second highest returning scorer with 7.7 points per game last season, and she can play either guard spot.

"Mary has worked hard in the offseason and it shows," Johnson said. "She's another one of our top defenders, but can score as well."

Tilleman drew starts in 24 of 26 games in her first season and scored 4.1 points per game. The coaching staff will be looking for continued improvement in her and fellow sophomores Erin Cepa (Glenview, Ill.) and Becca Paulson (Clayton, Wis.) as the year progresses.

"Our sophomores matured throughout last year," Johnson said. "Last season they were young and maybe didn't know what the college game was like, so they just played hard. We're expecting the same from them this year, to just go out and bring that energy and play hard every game."

The Muskies have bolstered their frontcourt depth with the addition of freshman Becky Mayo (Gladstone, Mich.), Leah Eisner (Stevens Point, Wis.) and Vashia Gordon (Green Bay, Wis.), along with the addition of Lakeland volleyball player Allison Davis (Sheboygan, Wis.). All four are at least six feet tall, and the group is expected to take some of the pressure in the inside off Blahnik and Coenen.

"Our freshmen are learning and progressing fairly well," Johnson said. "We have more height this year that makes us stronger and allows us to pull KC and Chelsea to the perimeter a little more. "

Lakeland will again be tested quickly this season. After opening at Carroll on Nov. 16, the Muskies will play four games in the next eight days, including the annual Lakeland Tip-Off Tournament.

"This is the second year we've opened the year with Carroll before the tip-off tournament," Johnson said. "It's nice to play on the road and have a challenge to open the year before coming home and playing in front of our fans."

After five consecutive games against NAC opponents, Lakeland will travel to California during winter break for back-to-back games against Occidental College and University of Redlands in Los Angeles and Redlands, respectively.

"We have to stay focused," Johnson said. "We'll be taking a look at the schedule and breaking it down into different segments and focusing on bits and pieces to come up with our goals rather than looking at the schedule as a whole."

Football team heads to UW-Whitewater for playoff opener

The Lakeland College football team will open the 2009 NCAA Division III Playoffs at defending national runner-up UW-Whitewater on Saturday, Nov. 21, at noon.

Whitewater is 10-0 and ranked second in both the d3football.com and American Football Coaches Association national top 25 polls. This is the Warhawks' seventh appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament with a national championship in 2007 and runner-ups in 2005, 2006 and 2008.

"Whitewater is a top-notch team and one of the best in the country year in and year out," Lakeland coach Kevin Doherty said. "However, we will treat this as any other game on the schedule. It doesn't change the way we prepare for any other team. We still have to watch film and work hard."

Lakeland (6-4) is making its second appearance in the tournament. The first came in 2005, a first-round loss to Augustana (Ill.).

"I don't know what to think yet," senior linebacker Jamie Schramm said. "We knew we were going to get a top team. It still really hasn't sunk in yet from yesterday."

The Muskies wrapped up the NCAA bid on Saturday with a 28-0 victory over Aurora, securing their first-ever Northern Athletics Conference championship and their fourth conference title in the last six years.

Following the win, Lakeland players, coaches, families and friends erupted in excitement on Taylor Field when it was announced that Concordia Chicago, which would have secured the NCAA playoff bid with a win, was defeated 15-14 by Benedictine.

The Warhawks defeated the Muskies 41-7 in the last meeting between the two teams on Sept. 1, 2007, at Lakeland. The teams played each other in each season from 2004-07, with Whitewater winning each contest handily. The closest Lakeland came was in a 48-28 setback in 2004.

Most of the Muskies' senior class was on the team when they faced Whitewater in 2006 and 2007. Senior captain Jacob Heinemeyer remembers the athleticism and quickness of the Warhawks.

"They are great athletes, and are fundamentally sound in all facets of the game," Heinemeyer said. "It will take an excellent performance by us to stay in the game. A fast start will be key for us."

Doherty, who is in his third year with the Muskies, is excited about drawing one of the nation's top football programs at a campus in close proximity to Lakeland. UW-Whitewater is approximately 100 miles southwest of Sheboygan.

"This is a great opportunity for our players and only a couple hours away from our campus," Doherty said. "This is great for our program, our families, friends and fellow students."

Whitewater's offensive coordinator is Jim Zebrowski, who was head coach at Lakeland for four seasons prior to joining the Whitewater staff. Several of the seniors on Lakeland's team played for Zebrowski.

2009-10 Men's Basketball Season Preview: Muskies set sights on improving, competing daily

In theory, the concept of "We Before Me," the mantra of the 2009-10 Lakeland men's basketball team, is quite simple.

Muskie players and coaches, however, hope that this philosophy - putting the team ahead of any individual - will be evident in everything they do this season.

One year after a 10-15 overall record and a fifth-place finish in the Northern Athletics Conference North Division, second-year head coach Aaron Aanonsen is hopeful that his team can make a push in the league standings.

"This year, we want everyone in our program to buy into helping do whatever it takes for the team to succeed," Aanonsen said. "Last season, we were inexperienced and weren't ready to play mentally or physically down the stretch. We need to compete every day in practice and in every single game."

Offensively, Aanonsen is hopeful that the team can improve its 67.4 points per game scoring average and cut down on its 15.7 turnovers per contest.

"We are trying to be more up-tempo this season," Aanonsen said. "To do that, we have to take care of the ball and improve our assist-to-turnover ratio. We've instilled a different offensive philosophy to help that."

Lakeland has also changed its defensive principles after surrendering 72.9 points per game and allowing 85 points or more in five of its last eight contests.

"Our goal is to be more aggressive on the defensive end," Aanonsen said. "It's a paradigm shift in approach for our guys, and they are taking a while to pick it up. However, I think it'll be beneficial in the long run."

Aanonsen has prepared what he believes to be a more challenging non-conference slate to prepare for the NAC schedule. The Muskies will take on a mix of in-state and regional opponents, highlighted by a four-team tournament at North Central on Nov. 20-21. Last season, Lakeland finished 6-3 in non-league contests, including a last-second victory at Lake Forest, where the team will open up on Nov. 15.

The Muskies, who have been picked to finish tied for fourth in the North Division this season by conference coaches, return four of last year's five starters, as well as the 2008-09 squad's top three scorers.

Jake Schwarz, a 6-foot-5 sophomore forward, returns as the team's leader in scoring (16.6 points per game) and rebounding (8.2 rpg). The Sheboygan, Wis., native earned honorable mention All-NAC and selection to the All-Freshmen team after placing among league leaders in points and rebounds per game, field goal percentage (.538) and free throw percentage (.851).

Schwarz is an extremely gifted offensive player with range out to the 3-point arc, but will need to improve on the defensive end to become a complete player.

"Jake needs to become a better defender and have a better feel for the game this season," Aanonsen said. "We're asking for a lot from him as a sophomore because he will need to adapt to how other teams will handle him on the offensive end."

Sophomore Josh Regal (Suring, Wis.), who was also named to the All-Freshmen team in 2008-09, averaged 15.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game and started all 25 contests for the Muskies. A lightning quick point guard, Regal also led the team in steals and will be relied on to handle the ball and get the team into offensive sets.

"Josh is a great playmaker, but now we're trying to get him to be a player who is under control," Aanonsen said. "If he honors our offensive principles, I think his assist-to-turnover ratio will improve."

The team's third leading scorer, senior guard Khendal Andrews, returns after averaging 10.8 points per game and shooting just over 36 percent from 3-point range. As one of the team's two seniors, the Kankakee, Ill., native is one of the team's most experienced players. He is also Lakeland's best shooter and is an above-average on-ball defender.

"There's no question Khendal is our best shooter, but now he just has to learn that role and embrace it," Aanonsen said. "He needs to stick to what he does well offensively. We need him to be more consistent this season if we want to win games."

Senior forward Anthony Cobb, a physical defender and rebounder at 6-foot-6 and 230 pounds, also returns as a starter for the Muskies. The Milwaukee, Wis., native averaged 5.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per game and shot 53.6 percent from the field.

"Anthony is learning his role much better this year," Aanonsen said. "He's improved his post defense and has a greater mentality scoring around the basket and rebounding."

Junior guard Phil Sontag is the team's lone addition to the starting line-up. Sontag (Altoona, Wis.) returns to action after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament prior to the 2008-09 season. As a sophomore, Sontag served primarily in a reserve role. He is one of the team's most fundamentally sound players, especially on the defensive end.

"Phil is an energy source for our team," Aanonsen said. "He's coming off a season-ending injury, so he has worked tirelessly so far and is hungry. He does the little things and is our best perimeter defender."

Aanonsen expects a number of players to contribute off the bench this season for Lakeland.

Freshman P.J. Marion (Milwaukee, Wis.) adds much-needed depth at the guard position. Marion is a strong, athletic guard who has the ability to break down a defense off the dribble.

"P.J. comes from a great high school program (Wisconsin Lutheran) and brings intensity and intelligence to our team," Aanonsen said. "He plays great on-ball defense and creates for others on offense."

Jamie Koebe, a freshman guard out of Seymour, Wis., will also see minutes for the Muskies. Koebe is a fantastic shooter who has improved defensively in the preseason.

Junior Sam Schroeder (Shawano, Wis.) and sophomores Eric Vandivier (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) and Hunter Wolf (Menasha, Wis.) will also challenge for playing time at the guard position. Vandivier is a versatile, smart player who averaged 3.5 points per game last season, while Wolf is an above-average shooter and energy player.

In the frontcourt, Aanonsen expects junior Trevor McKown (Hot Springs, S.D.), sophomore Germell Heard (Milwaukee, Wis.) and freshman Christian Baker (Bloomington, Ill.) to be contributors.

Heard started 12 games for Lakeland a year ago, averaging 6.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per contest.

"Germell has the ability to make plays around the basket," Aanonsen said. "He needs to be healthy and work on his fundamentals, but he brings a lot of energy to our team."

McKown has been a steady reserve for the Muskies for the past two years, appearing in nearly every game in that span.

Baker is somewhat undersized for his position at 6-foot-3, 190 pounds, but finishes well around the basket and is athletic.

Other players to watch this season include sophomore guard Brandon Young (Milwaukee, Wis.), freshman guards Matt Warren (Jensen Beach, Fla.) and Brandon Woods (Marion, Ill.), and freshman forwards Eric Strzok (Thorp, Wis.) and David Johnson (Stuart, Fla.).

Paulus named AVCA all-region for second time

Lakeland senior Brittanie Paulus has been selected to her second straight American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III All-Midwest Region team, the AVCA announced Thursday.

A Belgium, Wis., native, Paulus received her third all-region mention, earning honorable mention as a sophomore in 2007.

This season, the outside hitter led the Muskies to their third consecutive Northern Athletics Conference regular season and tournament titles and their second straight NCAA Tournament appearance. She recorded team highs with 418 kills and 550 digs.

"It feels great to get this award as a senior, even though the loss to end our season still hurts," Paulus said. "I feel blessed to have such great teammates ... they deserve more recognition and many of the honors that I'm lucky enough to get."

Paulus set school records for career digs (1,882) and digs in one season (550), and leaves the program second all-time in kills (1,357). She received all-conference accolades in each of her four years, and was a three-time first-team honoree and Player of the Year award winner in 2007.

"I wish each of our players had the competitiveness of a Brittanie Paulus," Lakeland coach Chad Schreiber said. "We ask her to do a lot in every aspect of the game, so I'm glad she isn't judged by others solely on her numbers. She will certainly go down as one of the best players in our program's history."

In addition to her on-court resume, Paulus was also recently named to the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District 5 women's volleyball third team.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">Sophomore's Kristina Borts and Autumn Gaylor have been selected by the Northern Athletics Conference to the 2009 NAC women's soccer Honorable Mention team.

A midfielder, Borts (Milwaukee, Wis.) started in 18 of 19 contests and led the Muskies this season with five goals and contributed two assists. For her career she has scored a total of 11 goals and 10 assists in her two seasons.

"Kristi had to adapt to a new role in the central midfield this year and did well," Lakeland head coach Dave Madsen said. "As the season progressed she added a little more ball-winning ability to her game and was still able to be a big contributor on the offensive side of the field. I am looking forward to seeing how she will build off of this for next year.<u1:p></u1:p> "

Gaylor (Ingleside, Ill.), a defender, appeared in 17 matches this season for Lakeland. Her loan goal this season, the second of her career came in a 2-1 loss against Concordia Chicago on a ball that curved into the upper left corner of the net.

"Autumn had another strong year for us at central defender," Madsen said. "She is always a strong presence for us and our opponents had to work very hard to minimize her presence in our backline. Autumn was also a threat going forward for throw-ins, corner kicks and also scored a very nice goal."

Four members of the Lakeland men's soccer team garnered All-Northern Athletics Conference mention as the league announced the 2009 All-NAC Men's Soccer team late Wednesday.

Sophomore captain Adam Benson (Anoka, Minn.) took home second-team honors, while sophomores Bobby Rublee (Sheboygan, Wis.) and Ben Koepsell (Cedar Grove, Wis.) garnered honorable mention accolades. Freshman goalkeeper Alex Piekarski (Menasha, Wis.) was named to the All-Freshman team.

Benson, a midfielder, led the Muskies with five assists and scored three goals. Known for his non-stop work rate, Benson was one of the team's most reliable and consistent options on both offense and defense.

"Adam played multiple positions for us and still contributed, so he did a nice job of getting involved," Lakeland coach David Madsen said. "He leads from the back, and had a big impact on our improvement in the middle of the season."

A central defender, Rublee led an improved Lakeland defense this season. He posted one goal and one assist for the year, starting all 19 contests.

"Bobby cleans up a lot of our messes," Madsen said. "He does the dirty work by winning 50-50 balls and chasing down forwards. He got involved a little more offensively as the season went on."

Koepsell, a midfielder, led the Muskies with eight goals. He scored the team's lone goal in Lakeland's 3-1 loss in the NAC Tournament quarterfinals at Edgewood.

"Ben might not be the most skilled player, but his attention to detail and work rate got him chances to score this season," Madsen said. "He had several important goals for us throughout the season."

Piekarski emerged as the team's primary option at goalkeeper approximately midway through the 2009 campaign. In 12 matches played (11 starts), Piekarski registered a 1.46 goals against average, 49 saves and three shutouts.

"It was important for Alex to gain confidence," Madsen said. "He is always willing to learn, and improved off his experiences earlier in the season. He also has good ability and physical size."

Sophomore Danny Spatchek (Chilton, Wis.) was named to the league's All-Sportsmanship team.

NAC regular season and tournament champion Dominican received two of the four individual honors, while MSOE, the league runner-up, garnered the remaining two.

Three women's volleyball players picked to All-NAC squad

Four members of the Lakeland women's volleyball program were recognized as the Northern Athletics Conference released its 2009 All-NAC Women's volleyball teams on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

Seniors Kim Linger (Eldorado, Wis.) and Brittanie Paulus (Belgium, Wis.) were placed on the first team, while junior setter Kristine Raeder (Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) earned honorable mention accolades.

Head coach Chad Schreiber was named the league's Co-Coach of the Year after leading the Muskies to their third consecutive NAC regular season and tournament titles. Dominican's Christine Paciero shared the accolade.

A middle hitter, Linger has emerged as one of the team's top offensive threats. Her .328 hitting percentage leads the conference, and her 64 service aces are first on the team and second in the conference. Linger, now a two-time member of the first team, was recently named the NAC Student-Athlete of the Week for women's volleyball.

"Kim has risen a step above in her senior year," Schreiber said. "She has improved her blocking, attacking, and now added a lethal serve."

Paulus, the league's 2007 Player of the Year, received her third consecutive first-team honor and fourth all-conference accolade. A four-year starter at outside hitter, Paulus broke the school's career digs record earlier this season and is on pace to finish among the program's all-time leaders in kills. She currently leads the team with 413 kills and 544 digs this season.

"Brittanie is the heart and soul of our team and one of the best players to ever wear a Lakeland uniform," Schreiber said. "If her numbers ever look unimpressive, it is only because we ask her too often to make the impossible play that she makes with regularity."

In her first year as the Muskies' starting setter, Raeder leads the conference with 1,228 assists at a rate 9.75 assists per set. As one of the team's most consistent servers, Raeder currently stands second on the team with 36 service aces.

"Kristine took over full-time setting duties this season and led the NAC in assists," Schreiber said. "She is a solid server and defender, and has improved every week this season."

Schreiber, who is in his 15th season with the Lakeland program, has now won three consecutive Coach of the Year awards and six overall in his career. The Sheboygan Falls, Wis., native notched his 300th career victory in Lakeland's three-set victory over Wisconsin Lutheran in the quarterfinals of the NAC Tournament on Nov. 3.

Entering the 2009 season, Schreiber was one of just 21 coaches under the age of 40 across all levels of the NCAA with at least 250 career victories.

"I am humbled by the award, especially since it was chosen by my coaching peers," Schreiber said. "This is always more of a player-performance award than a coaching award."

Senior libero Tonia Strebelinski (Berlin, Wis.), who has 464 digs and 20 service aces this season, was named to the NAC All-Sportsmanship team.

Middle blocker Katie Roessler of Concordia, Wis., received her second straight NAC Player of the Year honor.

Muskies excited for season finale against Aurora

The Lakeland College football team will be playing for a piece of its first Northern Athletics Conference championship as the Muskies wrap up the 2009 regular season against Aurora (4-5, 2-4 NAC) on Nov. 14 at 12:00 p.m.

"It's an interesting dynamic because each of the last three years we've gone into the final week playing for a share of the conference title or a playoff berth," Lakeland head coach Kevin Doherty said. "This year's game is similar to two years ago where if we win we can share the conference title but with some help we can go to the playoffs."

Lakeland (5-4, 5-1) is currently tied for first place in the NAC with Concordia Chicago. The Cougars hold the tie breaker for the automatic berth into the NCAA Division III playoffs after defeating the Muskies 41-32 on Oct. 17. Concordia Chicago closes out its season on Saturday against Benedictine, and a Benedictine win coupled with a Lakeland victory would send the Muskies to the NCAA playoffs for the second time in school history.

"Right now we're just focusing on controlling what we can control," Doherty said. "We can't control who wins or loses other than Aurora and Lakeland. We're just focusing on cleaning up our game from Saturday and preparing physically and emotionally for this week's game against Aurora"

Along with potential conference and playoff implications, Lakeland will be honoring its 10 seniors in a ceremony before the game.

"It's going to be a big game emotionally for our seniors," Doherty said. "We've got some guys that are two and three year starters while others have been role players who have stepped up into a starting capacity this year. You wouldn't know it by looking at them that this is their first year starting, they look like they've been playing the last two or three years. When their opportunity came they took the most of it."

Last weekend, the Muskies held Concordia Wisconsin to 204 total yards of offense in a 32-16 victory. It was Lakeland's second consecutive Cheese Bowl victory after dropping seven of eight previous match ups.

Quarterback Jake Dworak (DePere) threw for two touchdowns and ran a quarterback sneak for a third score as the Muskies put up 21 points in the second quarter to lead 23-13 at halftime.

"The Concordia Wisconsin game was a huge win for our program," Doherty said. "The kids were looking forward to that game for a while as does any team against their rival. It really set the tone to give the guys belief that if we play strong we can still share the conference title and that we're deserving of that."

Aurora enters this week's match up having lost two in a row and three out of its last four. After leading the NAC last season with a perfect 7-0 record, the Spartans have struggled to find a balance on defense. They have allowed over 30 points per game in four conference losses yet have outscored Maranatha and Rockford by a combined 72-0 in two conference victories.

Lakeland running back Jeremy Williams (Zion, Ill.) could be in for another big game this week. Second in the NAC in rushing, the sophomore has totaled 20 or more carries in seven of nine games this season and faces a rushing defense this week that has given up 126 rushing yards per game this season.

"They're very experienced on defense so up front is going to be a big test for us," Doherty said. "They're athletic and physical with some players in the secondary that can run."

Despite Aurora's struggles this season, none of the coaches or players will be overlooking the inaugural NAC champions on such an important day to the Lakeland football program.

"Every team that Aurora's played, they might not have won every game, but they've played every team extremely tough,"Doherty said. "Watching film, there are times where they've lost that they probably should have won. Their record doesn't truly indicate the type of team that they are."

Linger draws NAC player of the week honors

Lakeland senior Kim Linger has received the Northern Athletics Conference Student-Athlete of the Week award in women's volleyball for the week of Nov. 2-8, the league announced late Monday.

Linger, a senior middle hitter, helped guide the Muskies to their third consecutive NAC Tournament title and second straight appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

In Lakeland's thrilling five-set win in the tournament final at No. 1 seed Dominican, the Eldorado, Wis., native tied for a team high with 14 kills. The Muskies were able to make a crucial seven-point run in the fourth set off Linger's serve, which has become a weapon this season, according to Lakeland coach Chad Schreiber.

"Kim has added a powerful jump serve to her already strong offensive game as a middle," Schreiber said. "She has been on a roll for the last three weeks, and has been one of the critical pieces in helping us advance in postseason play.

"In the Dominican match, I told our girls if we get the ball to Kim and (sophomore middle hitter) Allison Davis out of serve receive in the fifth set, they wouldn't catch us."

In three conference tournament matches last week, Linger recorded a team-leading seven service aces to go along with 37 kills and 10 blocks.

For the season, Linger ranks first in the NAC in hitting percentage (.327) and second in the league with 0.51 service aces per set. She leads the team with 95 blocks and is second with 350 kills.

Lakeland begins NCAA Tournament play this Thursday as the No. 8 seed in the Great Lakes Region. The Muskies will take on regional host and No. 1 seed Hope at 7 p.m. Central (8 p.m. Eastern) in Holland, Mich.

Women's volleyball to open at Hope in NCAA Tournament; football still alive for NCAA Playoffs bid

The Lakeland women's volleyball team will head to Holland, Mich., this Thursday for a match against No. 1 seed and NCAA Great Lakes Regional host Hope. The match begins at 7 p.m. Central time (8 p.m. Eastern at Hope).

Lakeland is the region's No. 8 seed. The Muskies received the Northern Athletics Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament following its thrilling five-set win at Dominican in the conference tournament finals on Saturday.

The announcement came Monday morning, two days after the Muskies (23-12) erased a two-set deficit to defeat Dominican 25-27, 24-26, 25-19, 25-14, 15-10. The victory seemed most improbable after Lakeland lost a pair of tightly-contested sets in heart-breaking fashion.

The Muskies have now won three consecutive NAC Tournaments and will make their second straight NCAA Division III Tournament appearance.

"We've had such an up-and-down season, so we were prepared for a moment like this," Lakeland coach Chad Schreiber said following the match. "In practice on Friday, I told them to be prepared for everything. We have had every scenario, and we really had to push hard in the third set to extend the match."

Entering national tournament play, Lakeland has won four straight matches and eight of its last 10. Schreiber is pleased with the way the team has adjusted after struggling through a 2-6 stretch midway through the season.

"I've been hard on this team, telling them they haven't learned from the past enough," Schreiber said. "We already had the heart and talent to win, we just weren't playing smart. For the last three weeks, we have played intelligently and let our servers play to their strengths."

Hope (30-3), a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, lost to rival Calvin in four sets in the MIAA Tournament championship. The Flying Dutch are ranked fifth in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III Top 25 poll, and rank in the top five in the nation in assists per set and kills per set.

Last season, the Muskies lost at No. 1 seed and regional host UW-Oshkosh 25-19, 25-16, 25-19 in the first round of the tournament. The program is making its sixth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last eight years.

"As a group, we said we wanted to get to the tournament last year," Schreiber said. "This year it's the same, but now we want to stay there."

The Lakeland football team remains alive for the Northern Athletics Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Playoffs following a 32-16 win in the Cheese Bowl at Concordia, Wis., on Saturday.

A victory alone would give the Muskies (5-4 overall, 5-1 NAC) a share of their fourth conference title in the last six years. A win coupled with a Concordia Chicago loss, however, would give Lakeland the league's berth to the 2009 NCAA Playoffs.

"We feel really good right now," said senior wide receiver Jacob Heinemeyer, who had six receptions for 92 yards and a score against CUW. "We just have to control what we can control and finish out with a win over Aurora."

The Cougars (8-1, 5-1) own the tiebreaker over Muskies due to their 41-32 win at Lakeland on Oct. 17. CUC hosts Benedictine at 12 p.m. Saturday, while Lakeland hosts Aurora simultaneously.

The Muskies have won three straight contests, outscoring opponents 81-30 in that span.

"We've got great emotion right now and our kids are really excited," Lakeland coach Kevin Doherty said following the win. "We're ready for Senior Day this Saturday, and our team is really cohesive right now. I think they'd play tomorrow if they could."

Wrestling to host Lakeland Duals this Saturday, Nov. 7

The Lakeland wrestling team hosts the season-opening Lakeland Duals this Saturday, Nov. 7, at 9 a.m. at the Wehr Center Field House.

The tournament, which features seven teams and five rounds of dual matches, includes a pair of nationally ranked teams in No. 8 Concordia Moorhead (Minn.) and No. 10 North Central (Ill.), as well as Lakeland, MSOE, Trine (Ind.), UW-Eau Claire and Wabash (Ind.).

Last season in the Lakeland Duals, the Muskies won one of four dual contests, defeating UW-Eau Claire 26-21. Lakeland lost to UW-Parkside and two nationally-ranked foes in North Central and St. John's.

"I think this tournament will let us know where we're at right away," Lakeland coach Pete Rogers said. "Last year, I think it helped with some of them at the beginning of the year because it gave everybody an idea of where they needed to be closing in at the end. So we start off strong, and I think that's exactly what we need in order to peak at the right time."

Here is a look at each team competing in the 2009 Lakeland Duals:

Concordia Moorhead (10-1 in dual meets in 2008-09)

The Concordia-Moorhead wrestling team is looking forward to another exciting season, highlighted again by a trip to the National Duals in January. The National Duals feature the top teams in DI, DII, DIII, NAIA and the Junior Colleges. The Cobbers were again selected for this prestigious tournament because of their strong showing last season placing fifth against the top ranked teams in DIII. The Cobbers will also be competing in the Wartburg Desert Duals Tournament on Dec. 20.

Last season the Cobbers finished the year ranked eighth nationally, finished second in the Great Lakes Conference, compiled a 10-1 dual record on the season and had a national finalist in Phil Moenkedick at 184 pounds.

Lakeland (9-7)

The Muskies look to continue their climb as national contenders after finishing 21st at the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament last season. Five Lakeland wrestlers placed in the top six at the Great Lakes Regional, and the team won the Northern Wrestling Association Tournament with four individual champions. The Muskies return All-American Adam Sutter (HWT), who placed sixth at nationals. Sutter, who will be inactive for the Lakeland Duals, was a wild card qualifier for the tournament, finished third at regionals, won a pair of tournaments and finished as runner-up in two others.

Other top returners for the Muskies:

Sophomore Rob Frias (133): NWA champion and Rookie of the Year, fourth at Al Hanke Invite

Junior Isaac Roberson (149): NWA runner-up, sixth at Great Lakes Regional, fifth at Al Hanke Invite

Senior Jake Frias (165): NWA runner-up, runner-up at Cornell Matman Invitational

MSOE

The Raiders return one national qualifier in junior Virgil Pope (141). Pope received an at-large bid to the national tournament after placing third at the Great Lakes Regional, becoming the fourth national qualifier in MSOE history.

MSOE finished third in the Northern Wrestling Association as Pope and senior Joel VandeBoom (157) claimed individual NWA championships. Following the tournament, coach Kevin Morin was selected as the league's Coach of the Year.

North Central (15-2)

Top returning starters
125 Joe Norton 3rd Great Lakes
133 Nathan Fitzenreider 13-2 before injury
157 Cowan Brown CCIW Champ
184 Gabe Youel 4th NCAA
197 Vinnie Sapienza 3rd Great Lakes
285 Rodney Knowlton

Despite the loss of NCAA runner-up Ben Youel, North Central brings an experienced team into 2009-2010. Two-time All-American Gabe Youel returns as the lone national qualifier, and he will challenge for an NCAA championship this March. A full season from the talented Fitzenreider, along with the final year of competition for regional placewinners Joe Norton and Vinnie Sapienza, should also help. North Central welcomes a fine recruiting class highlighted by Oklahoma transfer John Starzyk. North Central will again take on a tough schedule including the Desert Duals, National Duals, Midlands, and Pete Willson Invitational as they seek a third straight CCIW title and a fifth straight top 15 NCAA finish.

Trine (11-5)

Thunder wrestling made huge strides in 2008-09, and this season holds even more expectations for the five-year old program. The Thunder upset nationally-ranked Olivet early last season and jumped into national polls for the first time ever. The Thunder also finished second in the Midwest Regional.

The team is poised for another successful season. Trine has good upper class representation, promising young wrestlers and lots of potential with a solid recruiting class that should challenge for starting spots right away.

Eight returners competed at the regional. Senior Nick Kraus at 184, finished 29-5 last season, including a third-place finish at the regional. He is 83-30 overall at Trine. Junior Alex Fleet, at 197, was also third and 30-9 on the season. Sophomore Kyle Long at 157 was 28-15 and just missed the national tournament, finishing second at the regional. Sophomore Brandon Harvey in the 125 class, was 27-15 in 2008-09 and fifth at the regional.

UW-Eau Claire (6-12)

Wrestlers to watch: Andy Johnston - took second at WIAC Championship at 149 pounds, overall record of 27-9; Jon Ames (157 pounds) - took fifth at WIAC Championship last year; Joe Pitsch (285 pounds) - took fifth at WIAC Championship last year; Zach Weisenberger (141 pounds) and Keith Dawson (174 pounds) both took sixth at WIAC Championship last year.

This season, the Blugolds return 12 letterwinners. Eau Claire has seven newcomers this season as well. The last two seasons, the Blugolds took fifth at the conference championship but first year head coach Derek Sikora hopes to improve the Blugolds' finish.

Wabash (6-4)
